Aging isn't just a physical clock—it is a choice of energy, environment, and total commitment.

Most middle-aged professionals hit an invisible wall where life gradually shifts from spontaneous excitement into an exhausting checklist of obligations. When work, domestic routines, and endless "have-to" tasks stack up, even major holidays and family events begin to feel like chores. But staying trapped in this passive midlife routine liquidates your vitality. You end up living in a state of chronic limbo—half in, half out, constantly second-guessing your next move—which bleeds your subconscious energy, stalls your momentum, and makes you feel older at 45 than a room full of vibrant 75-year-olds.

In this high-vibrational, insightful episode of the Living Lucky® Podcast, Jana and Jason introduce the concept of "Reverse Benjamin Button Energy"—aging on the outside while growing younger, bolder, and more curious on the inside. Inspired by Jason's recent trip to help his parents move into an active 55+ community outside Atlanta (and finding them drinking on coolers at a Friday night clubhouse party), they dissect how community, clear decisions, and vibrant environments systematically restore youthful vitality.

Inside:

  • The Friday Happy Hour Phenomenon: How an active retirement community's social chair created a college-like atmosphere that instantly elevated its residents' baseline energy.
  • The "Have-To" Trajectory: A candid look at how midlife routines quietly turn once-beloved traditions (like Christmas or family trips) into burdensome domestic chores.
  • The High Cost of Limbo: Why sitting on the fence during big transitions drains human vitality far faster than executing a hard decision ever could.
  • The "Cocoon" Effect: How Jason’s mother reclaimed 20 years of youthful momentum the exact second she committed to clearing her house and moving to the city.
  • Injecting City Vibes for Creativity: Why stepping into a high-octane environment (like Miami or Atlanta) acts as a powerful reboot for your personal and professional creative state.

Stop letting unexamined routines and decision fatigue drain your life energy. If you are ready to break out of midlife limbo, go all in on your next chapter, and cultivate reverse Benjamin Button vitality, hit play now.

NUGGETS

  • Vitality is an intentional choice. Youthful energy isn't bounded by age; it is generated by social connection, curiosity, and environment.
  • Limbo is an absolute energy drain. Remaining half in and half out of a decision bleeds more mental fuel than actually taking action.
  • Decisions create instant momentum. Going all in on a new direction eliminates decision fatigue and triggers immediate internal power.
  • Be mindful when fun becomes an obligation. When you reframe a "get to" experience as a "have to" task, your brain shuts down creative engagement.
  • Change your scene to reboot your state. Sometimes tapping into a high-energy city environment is the exact catalyst needed to ignite personal creativity.

Questions:

What is "Reverse Benjamin Button Energy" in personal growth and healthy aging? "Reverse Benjamin Button Energy" is a mindset model that focuses on cultivating increasing internal vitality, curiosity, and emotional playfulness as the physical body ages. Instead of succumbing to midlife stagnation or social withdrawal, individuals cultivate internal youthfulness by making clear decisions, joining active communities, and choosing high-vibrational social environments.

How does remaining in decision limbo impact daily energy and momentum? Remaining in decision limbo drains energy because the mind consumes cognitive bandwidth worrying, second-guessing, and anticipating outcomes without taking action. This open-loop state triggers decision fatigue and chronic low-grade stress. Making a definitive choice closes the mental loop, freeing up psychological bandwidth to generate immediate momentum.

Why do fun activities and family traditions begin to feel like chores during midlife? Fun activities feel like chores during midlife due to cognitive over-scheduling and identity shifts. When domestic responsibilities, work demands, and family logistics pile up, the brain re-categorizes "get to" experiences (such as holidays or social events) as operational "have to" tasks. This reframing replaces anticipation and joy with obligation and exhaustion.

Reverse Benjamin Button Energy Hook

Jana Shelfer

Imagine growing old on the outside and getting younger on the inside.

Speaker 1

That sounds fun or terrifying.

Jana Shelfer

Energy is contagious, and we're talking about it today.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Jana Shelfer

I'm Jana. I'm Jason. And we are Living Lucky®. You are too. We're talking about reverse Benjamin Button-ing.

Speaker 1

That sounds exciting.

Jana Shelfer

Wait, let's just get it clear.

Speaker 1

Benjamin Button got younger on the outside.

Jana Shelfer

And older on the inside.

Speaker 1

I think.

Parents Move Into Active Community

Jana Shelfer

Okay, so Jason went to visit his parents this weekend.

Speaker 1

Old people.

Jana Shelfer

Oh, stop.

Speaker 1

Don't. They're older than me.

Jana Shelfer

They're finally listening to our podcast now. Now that it's video podcasts.

Speaker 1

They're watching it with the captions.

Jana Shelfer

Here's the thing. They just moved into this new condo. It's a townhome. Townhome, yes. They just bought this new townhome. And it's in uh an older How do you say it? I would say it's over 55 kids.

Speaker 1

Definitely over 55 in Atlanta, outside of Atlanta, on the on the outskirts.

Jana Shelfer

Okay, well, Jason said that he showed up to help them move over the weekend. Yep. And he said, Jana, you would have started laughing because here my parents were in the middle of It was a circle, it was a like a bonfire circle of old people.

Speaker 1

I'm like, I I showed up to the to the townhome and no one's there.

Jana Shelfer

Okay.

Speaker 1

And I so I pull it around to the back.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Speaker 1

No one's there. The garage door's open.

Jana Shelfer

Uh-huh.

Speaker 1

And my mom calls and she goes, Oh, we're across the street at the clubhouse. And so I said, Okay, well, I'll go over to the clubhouse. I figured they were getting keys or whatever.

Jana Shelfer

No, they're partying it up.

Speaker 1

There was a Friday night happy hour. That apparently one woman.

Jana Shelfer

I love that for them.

Speaker 1

So one woman has designated herself as the Friday night happy hour.

Jana Shelfer

The social chair.

Speaker 1

She is the social chair. So just like in sorority.

Jana Shelfer

She likes to mingle.

Speaker 1

In college, she's like, I'm gonna organize the neighborhood and we're gonna get together, and we're nothing's gonna nothing's holding us back. Nothing's slowing us down. We're gonna have our our game nights and all

Retiree Social Life Sparks Vitality

Speaker 1

that.

Jana Shelfer

So there's actually studies that here in Florida, there's a place called the Villages, and it's where a lot of retirees come.

Speaker 1

I thought you were gonna say something else, but thank you.

Jana Shelfer

And there's actually, I mean, there's it's a happening place.

Speaker 1

It is a happening place.

Jana Shelfer

There's a lot of parties.

Speaker 1

If you can't find something to do in the villages, you just there's there's so many activities.

Jana Shelfer

So many activities. In fact, I think there's a lot of STDs that happen in there. There's a lot of swingers. Extracurricular activities. Okay, so what we're really talking about though is energy. Energy is contagious and vitality.

Speaker 1

Vitality It was so funny because that so mom and dad have been moving and like getting things ready for the the townhome. It's a three-story townhome. And so they're going up and down these stairs all day long. They're in their 70s, and they were just a sweaty mess. Okay. And I get there, and there had to be 25 people, 25 or more people, and mom is in the middle, just surrounded by these women and and their husbands.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Speaker 1

Dad is kind of over like 10 or 11 people away, sitting on a cooler, like uh with uh Bartles and James or whatever it was in the cooler. Have a car. They are just all talk, just talking. Where are you from? What do you do? What did you do? What's fun to do? What do you like? Where do you like to walk?

Jana Shelfer

Great.

Speaker 1

It was incredible.

Jana Shelfer

And the smiles. It's almost like when you're going off to college and there's that dreaming and scheming and living life. There's that newness and that freshness. And then for some reason, we get a little stale in the middle of life. And so it it's nice to see that that newness can happen again.

Speaker 1

Yeah, and this has been going on for like 16 years.

Jana Shelfer

With your parents?

Speaker 1

No, with this community. Like this lady has been social chairing.

Jana Shelfer

Okay.

Speaker 1

This whole um so the newness didn't wear off, doesn't wear off here.

Jana Shelfer

Okay.

Speaker 1

So you got you. So people allow it to wear off, or they choose not to let it wear off.

Midlife Busy Turns Fun Into Chores

Speaker 1

It's a choice, is what it's like. It's a choice. We can either say, So why then I'm used to my environment. I'm getting used to there's nothing to do here, I've done it all before, or I can choose the energy of what might be exciting and new at this experience, even though it might be the same people, it might be the same discussion, there might be a new nugget in this.

Jana Shelfer

Okay, we say that. However, we both know I know that in midlife it is so easy to get caught up being busy, being a big.

Speaker 1

Being busy, yeah. I can't make it this week. Right. Not gonna make it next week.

Jana Shelfer

And being caught up in those same emotions, laundry's piling up the same feelings, those same activities, and those same emotions.

Speaker 1

Allowing it to turn into a chore.

Jana Shelfer

Yeah.

Speaker 1

Yeah. That that's the danger. So uh turning turning something that is fun and exciting into a chore.

Jana Shelfer

A have to, yeah, or an obligation.

Speaker 1

Right.

Jana Shelfer

I mean, I had I've had 20 years of where Christmas has turned into an absolute gifts.

Speaker 1

Get the donuts.

Jana Shelfer

Right? Like I I've almost said a curse word about four times just now, even thinking about it. Like, oh god, it's Christmas.

Speaker 1

And Christmas is fun and exciting. I've got Christmas girls and now it kind of that kind of goes back to the fair, where it's like once we force ourselves to get get over that hump of what we're telling ourselves about it.

Jana Shelfer

Which was our last podcast.

Speaker 1

Yeah, then we have a great time.

Jana Shelfer

I always have a great time once I force myself to go. Today we're talking, though, about the energy. Energy from within. And it really is

Limbo Drains Energy Commitment Fuels

Jana Shelfer

a choice. And Jason noticed it this weekend. Immediately with his parents who are getting older, they're in their older years, and they've moved in. Oh, stop. We don't need to exaggerate it.

Speaker 1

I'm doing this for their benefit.

Jana Shelfer

They've moved into a retirement community, and it's almost like that movie. I think the movie was Cocoon.

Speaker 1

Oh, that's an oldie.

Jana Shelfer

It's an old movie. In fact, I tried to rent it over the weekend when you told me this was happening.

Speaker 1

You might have to go look for a VHS tape.

Jana Shelfer

We don't have a way of even watching VHS. We don't even have a way of watching DVDs.

Speaker 1

They stack so easily.

Jana Shelfer

But anyway, uh it's that old movie Cocoon where the old people jump into the swimming pool, I think, and the swimming pool had been shocked by aliens and something.

Speaker 1

Gave them some youthful quality.

Jana Shelfer

That's what I remember most of the gave them a youthful energy, and then all of a sudden, these old people started playing volleyball.

Speaker 1

Bang volleyball.

Jana Shelfer

And started just having this aura about them, which was vitality. It's vitality is what it is. And there's been so many times when I, I mean, going through menopause and all change and hormones, where I have often said, gosh, I just want vitality.

Speaker 1

Just want to feel that energy again.

Jana Shelfer

And sometimes my my insides don't always match my outsides. And so it's learning, okay, well, how do I find that youthful energy inside?

Speaker 1

Create that energy within myself.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Speaker 1

Yeah, and that's I think that's one of the things that um we can all get better at.

Jana Shelfer

And I will say that with your mom, I noticed it immediately when she made the decision to move to Atlanta. When she clearly said, I am moving to Atlanta. All of a sudden, she got this this energy from within. So it wasn't just moving to this townhouse house, it was I'm moving to Atlanta, and it was the whole journey like clearing out the old house. Clearing out the old house.

Speaker 1

I'm putting it up, getting rid of the baggage.

Jana Shelfer

It wasn't, I mean, it wasn't I mean, because they kinda made the decision half in, half out a couple years ago. That in and out was it was half they were in limbo.

Speaker 1

Yeah, that limbo will drain you.

Jana Shelfer

The limbo will drain you. Yes.

Speaker 1

If you if you're sitting there trying to decide the waiting, the waiting and the worrying and the like the not knowing will drain all like that, will just suck energy right out of you.

Jana Shelfer

But then once she went all in and said, No, this is what I'm doing, this is where I'm going, and I kind of think that she made that without your dad, she kind of said, No, I'm tired of waiting for your dad. If I will I I may be speaking out of turn here, but she kind of said, you know what? Your dad is happy at the mountains in the mountains doing his He's a mountain man, he's a mountain man. Your dad is a mountain man, your mom is not, and she kind of said, You know what, you do your mountain thing, I'm moving to Atlanta. And when she made that decision, like she went and she cleared out that house all by herself, took her three weeks, but she did it all by herself, and then she literally bought the new house before the old house even sold, like overnight, right? And then like it has been boom, boom, boom, bing, bang, bong.

Speaker 1

Well, think about when you're if you're going out and driving, if you don't know where you're gonna drive to, like if you don't have if you haven't made a decision about where you're gonna drive to, yes, you're you're just burning fuel, burning energy, just wandering around aimlessly. But if you know where you're going, then you can just get very focused and and fast. Like you you're you get energy momentum right behind you, and you and you can go directional. And that that's a that's kind of um this energy that we're talking about is very you can see it, you can feel it, you can hear it in her voice.

Jana Shelfer

Obviously.

Speaker 1

You can hear the vitality in her and the excitement in her.

Jana Shelfer

She's grown 20 years younger in the last six weeks. Six weeks alone.

Speaker 1

Yeah. And there's this energy about her. It's it's like that um who was the lady from Green Acres that um now that's an old show. Yeah, she was like New York lady. She needed that New York energy.

Jana Shelfer

Uh-huh.

Speaker 1

But it's uh she she feels it. City energy. She loves she she likes that city vibe. Yeah. And and it was

City Vibes And Living Lucky

Speaker 1

great.

Jana Shelfer

You know, this whole I sometimes feel that. I sometimes think, you know what? I want that Miami. I sometimes feel Miami. I'm like, we gotta go to Miami.

Speaker 1

We just we need to go down there just for a weekend.

Jana Shelfer

Just go to Miami, and then I need to come back to my my lake house. But every now and then I gotta go to Miami.

Speaker 1

Get those vibes, get those creative juices flowing.

Jana Shelfer

Yeah, and get a little salsa. Ooh, spicy. Yeah, a little spicy.

Speaker 1

I like it.

Jana Shelfer

I like it. Anyway, grow younger. It starts from within. It's all about the energy that we want. Embody. Thanks for joining us. Keep Living Lucky®. Bye-bye.
