Playing it safe out of a fear of wasting time is the absolute fastest way to guarantee a slow, agonizing loss.

When ambitious high-performers hit midlife, their primary psychological hurdle changes flavor. It is no longer just a standard fear of failure; it transforms into a suffocating pressure regarding timelines. The lizard brain traps you in a default comfort zone, weaponizing past embarrassments, wrong turns, and disappointments to keep you "safe under the tarp." It convinces you that making a new choice might result in the exact same stagnation—so you choose to stay hidden and slowly wither away.

In this landmark episode of the Living Lucky® Podcast, Jason and Jana deconstruct what it actually means to pull your feet out of the concrete and consciously engineer your own luck. They strip the fluff away from manifestation and replace it with a pragmatic, iterative framework for personal development: nothing is a waste, and every single choice is merely a door that leads to the next piece of real-world data.

Inside:

  • The 3-Tier Matrix of Existence: How to graduate your mindset from "life is happening to me," to "happening for me," and ultimately to the elite pinnacle where reality is flowing through you.
  • The Lucid Dreaming Protocol: A high-leverage mental metaphor for directing the script of your life while you are actively experiencing the storm.
  • The Synchronicity Loophole: A bizarre, real-world case study of how a simple search for a local dog-sitter manifested a professional ballroom dancer and creative director for their new keynote show within 72 hours.
  • Reframing the "Unlucky" Glitch: The exact perspective shift required when hardware cages shatter, schedules explode, and expensive, unscripted problems threaten your momentum.
  • Catching the Break vs. Creating It: Why elite self-belief requires setting a narrower target so your Reticular Activating System can drop opportunities directly in your path.

You cannot sit under a survival tarp waiting to "catch a break." If you are ready to stop treating uncertainty like a permanent verdict and start treating life like an iterative laboratory, this episode is your compass.

Listen now, subscribe, and learn how to steer your sailboat regardless of what the ocean does.

NUGGETS

  • Realism is often just a sophisticated mask for absolute terror. Postponing an identity shift because you are afraid of wasting time ensures you burn your limited timelines doing things you despise.
  • No choice is a permanent verdict; it is an iterative door. Stepping into a room and realizing it isn't your forever environment isn't a failure—it is high-value data that sharpens your next coordinates.
  • Lucid living requires practicing presence inside the script. You may not command the immediate weather patterns of the ocean, but you possess absolute control over the alignment of your sails.
  • Synchronicity is the natural byproduct of a hyper-focused brain filter. When you ask better, high-vibrational questions, your subconscious automatically alters your awareness to locate precise solutions in your local environment.
  • An unlucky event is just an unscripted plot twist. True mindset mastery means greeting a sudden infrastructure breakdown or an expensive error with curiosity, asking: "What is our next offensive move from here?"

Questions:

What does it mean when personal growth coaches say life happens "through you"?
When life happens "through you," an individual has transitioned past reactive coping and passive optimism into a state of intentional agency. In this elite mindset threshold, the person recognizes that their internal beliefs, focus, and choices actively dictate their perception of circumstances, allowing them to manipulate their reality and manifest opportunities through deliberate action.

Why does decision anxiety peak during midlife transitions?
Decision anxiety peaks during midlife because an individual's psychological relationship with time shifts. The fear of immediate failure is replaced by a profound anxiety over wasting remaining timelines on incorrect choices, causing the lizard brain to default to familiar comfort zones to prevent potential embarrassment, even if that safety causes slow-motion stagnation.

How does treating life choices as "iterative doors" reduce the fear of failure?
Treating choices as iterative doors reduces the fear of failure by removing the pressure to achieve perfection on the first attempt. By viewing every action as a mechanism to gather clearer personal data and sharper self-trust, an individual realizes that a wrong turn simply refines their trajectory, allowing them to experiment safely without labeling themselves as behind.

  • The Foreign Forehead: The awkward reality of trying to explain luck to a cynical crowd
People look at us like we have unicorn horns or worse when we talk about engineering reality. Discover why the general population treats intentional mindset shifts like total fiction.
  • The Time-Squeeze Panic: Why midlife professionals freeze right before expansion
When you hit a critical point on your biological runway, the flavor of fear alters completely. Turn here to find out why your brain would rather let you wither in a bad career than risk a new error.
  • Laying Under the Tarp: The survival show defense mechanism that is quietly starving your soul
Analyze the raw psychology of Alone contestants who choose to freeze under canvas to conserve energy rather than hunt. Learn how this defensive reflex trains your spirit to decay in real-world environments.
  • The Door Logic: Eradicating the high-stakes pressure of "getting it right"
You don't need a forever blueprint to take your next step. Learn how to treat every career or relational pivot as a diagnostic room that automatically refines your soul's alignment.
  • The 3 Tiers of Source: Graduating past the basic "life is happening for you" framework
Most intermediate self-help stops at tier two. Discover the elite, high-vibrational mechanics of moving into tier three—where external abundance is funneled completely through your deliberate execution.
  • The Dancer in the Driveway: A wild case study in hyper-speed local synchronicity
We needed an emergency dog sitter for a trip to Tampa to protect our keynote assets. Listen to the bizarre breakdown of how a random neighborhood search produced an art major and professional ballroom dancer.
  • Defining the Skill: Shifting your definition of luck from a lottery ticket to an operational asset
Luck isn't something you catch; it's a byproduct of hyper-focused awareness paired with aggressive baseline steps. Learn how to map your path as you plant your foot.
  • The Broken Cage Crisis: Maintaining a world-champion baseline when your gear explodes
After winning world titles, we hit a heavy streak of mechanical failure over the weekend. Learn exactly how we reframed an expensive, unscripted logistics nightmare into an intentional car ride adventure.

What “Living Lucky” Means

Jana Shelfer

Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®.

Jason Shelfer

Good morning.

Jana Shelfer

I'm Jana. I'm Jason. And we are Living Lucky®. You are too. What does that even mean? I don't know. Help me understand it. I feel like in this journey, Jason and I started this business and we could not quite articulate what are you trying to do here? We're like, create your luck. Consciously. Create your luck. Well, I think And people just look at us like we've got unicorn horns on our heads.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah, something. Like a I sometimes I feel like people look at me like I might have a dildo hanging off my forehead.

Jana Shelfer

Oh, wait. Well, I thought you did. What is that thing?

Jason Shelfer

And I hate to be vulgar like that, but I get that look sometimes. It's uh it's one of those things where it's like, are you are you serious? Create my own luck, create reality.

Jana Shelfer

So I guess what I'm getting at is Jason has coached people all over the world now. You have quite an extensive list of people that you've been one-on-one, very intimate with, not intimate in that way.

Midlife Fear And The Comfort Zone

unknown

Right.

Jana Shelfer

And you have you have picked their brains of what works, what doesn't, what's happening there. Why it why do they get to midlife and they're almost scared to get outside their comfort zone because their lizard brain is trying to protect them from all these experiences they've had in the past that where they felt goosebumps embarrassed or ashamed or like they failed.

Jason Shelfer

New fear of I don't want to waste any more time.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

Because now we're at a we're at that critical point in the scale of, hey, I've I've gone this far, and I feel like there's this, there's this underlying fear of I haven't made the right decision because I'm in, I'm not following my right path right now, or I need to make this change. And I'm scared that if I make the wrong decision, quote unquote, again, then I will have wasted this precious life I wanted to.

Jana Shelfer

Or what if I make a total change and it ends up not being what I thought it was gonna be? And and again, what if I end up in the exact same place that I'm at now?

Jason Shelfer

And that scares the crap out of people.

Jana Shelfer

It's like, do I really want to invest the time, the resources, the energy? It's almost like it's almost like that show that I I'm so obsessed with right now alone, where they literally, they're like, okay, is it worth my energy?

Jason Shelfer

You're just gonna lay in lay in the the tent to lay under the tarp.

Jana Shelfer

To take the risk of going hunting when I know that I may catch nothing.

Jason Shelfer

I'm gonna lay in the tarp and just wither.

Jana Shelfer

Yeah. I don't want to be that person.

Jason Shelfer

Right. None of us do.

Jana Shelfer

That's the person I don't want to be.

Jason Shelfer

And this is one of the things that we talk about with the with the coaching clients is nothing is a waste. Everything is experience is a door that leads to another door.

Jana Shelfer

And you may go through that door and say, you know what, this isn't exactly for me. But in that process, you will learn to pick the door that is closer to what aligns with your soul.

Jason Shelfer

You will also realize what's behind the door. Like it's it's you just picked, you just uncovered something.

Jana Shelfer

So

Luck As Something You Create

Jana Shelfer

what I really want to dive into in this podcast is I feel that most people believe luck is something that happens to them.

Jason Shelfer

And they also sit around waiting for it.

Jana Shelfer

Most people think, oh, you know, if I get lucky, if I get lucky, oh gosh, I hope I win the lottery. Oh, if I get lucky. The the thing is, is when you start realizing that life is not happening to you, life is happening. The next step is life is happening for you, and the step after that is life is happening through you.

Jason Shelfer

Oh.

Jana Shelfer

And

Lucid Dreaming As A Life Metaphor

Jana Shelfer

that is when life really starts to get fun because it's almost like have you so I took this class one time on dreaming, lucid dreaming. And even though you're dreaming and you're having you're sleeping in the middle of a sleep, you're having a dream, and even though it's happening, it's that state where you're kind of aware that you're dreaming.

Jason Shelfer

But you're not, so you think that you're standing in front of the toilet.

Jana Shelfer

No, no, no, no. Maybe this was a bad analogy.

Jason Shelfer

I'm kidding. Okay.

Jana Shelfer

It's where you can start to manipulate the dream. Manipulate the dream a little bit. Like, no, I don't I don't want this to be scary. I want that monster to be my best friend. Right.

Jason Shelfer

And then you start.

Jana Shelfer

And then all of a sudden you you start making choices in your dream.

Jason Shelfer

Yes. And then you actually start, it's almost like you start cr directing the movie that's happening while you're experiencing it. And it's incredible.

Jana Shelfer

And if you ever have had that moment, you're like, wow, that was so cool. Because yes, I was the sailor in the ocean, and maybe you know, the waves were happening, but I was able to guide my sailboat.

Jason Shelfer

And then I parted the seas. It's it's absolutely insane. And this is how I feel like life is happening right now for us. Oh my gosh.

Jana Shelfer

Outside.

Synchronicity Story With The Dog Sitter

Jana Shelfer

We've had okay, can I just stop? I didn't mean to interrupt you, but I have to share this.

Jason Shelfer

I'm married.

unknown

Oh.

Jana Shelfer

Oh, and you love it. You love it. I've created this life for myself. I have to just share this with everyone that is listening right now. Jason and I have been having these super mystical experiences. No, no, no, not that. Although maybe we should. Okay, so we've been having these experiences where literally it's like my ants, the answers come in my brain first, and then all of a sudden within hours, days, and maybe a week.

Jason Shelfer

So the the longest that I've seen was like an a couple hours to like maybe 72 hours later. So three days later, three or four days.

Jana Shelfer

All of a sudden, someone or something or graffiti on a wall will happen. And I'm like, that's the answer that we just figured out.

Jason Shelfer

Or that we had asked or had a had a lucky question for.

Jana Shelfer

For example, okay, so hear me out here. Jason Knight, you know, if you've been listening, we take ballroom dance lessons, we're putting together this. It started out as a one-woman show who brought in her husband.

Jason Shelfer

Now it's turned into a keynote experience.

Jana Shelfer

Yes. So we're changing the label because it's like growing as we create this. But we're incorporating our dance and our speaking and stories and all sorts of fun little quips. And what has happened in this is we needed a dog sitter for Tuesday. I mean, out of the blue. We are going to Tampa. We need a dog sitter. And so we called actually, you put a post in.

Jason Shelfer

Well, I called a dog sitter that we should we were gonna have last time, but she couldn't do it.

Jana Shelfer

Okay, so she lives in our neighborhood. And anyway, she comes over to meet Tater yesterday, and we start talking to her, and I am like, this is a gift from the universe. Not this. She is a gift from the universe because all of a sudden she starts talking and she's like, Yeah, I'm a professional ballroom dancer. And Jason and I looked at each other. I was like, bling bling bling. And then she talks about being an art major, and then she talks about things she's creating, and she goes, and then there's a really there's another side of me. I love adventure and nature. And I'm like, oh my gosh, she's like a mini Jana Jason.

Jason Shelfer

She's like on Walden Pond with us.

Jana Shelfer

I mean, this is what our daughter would be like if we had one. Anyway, so it it's so bizarre though. It's like I was looking for someone to maybe share this show experience that we're creating and someone who could maybe help us, even if it's with the lighting and with the the technical parts of the case.

Jason Shelfer

And she knows how to work an iPad.

Jana Shelfer

And all of a sudden she comes in and I'm like, she would be perfect. Yeah. And so it it just is weird how I'm finding the answers in my head. And sometimes I say them out loud, sometimes I don't, and then the answer just appears. It is bizarre.

Jason Shelfer

Well,

Perspective When Life Feels Unlucky

Jason Shelfer

so Living Lucky® is creating our own reality. Living lucky is the right people, the right time, the right experience, the right opportunity happening when it's it's laying that path out in the direction that you're going as you're putting your foot down in that pathway.

unknown

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

Like it is creating the dream as you dream it.

Jana Shelfer

Which is lucid dreaming. Yes. While you're living. Life is but a dream. I think Wayne Dyer used to say that.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah. So and that's and that's what we're trying to explain to people. And I and I never understood it before. You know, it's like trying to explain to someone Living Lucky®. What does it mean to wake up in the morning and feel like I'm the luckiest person on the planet, then have something that feels like it's not lucky happen, and then still be able to go to bed in the evening feeling like I'm the luckiest person on the planet. It's all about the perspective. It's my awareness, it's perspective, it's the actions that I take. It's it's those things around that that know, it's these are just little tiny things. But things are happening for me and in my favor anyway.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

You know, it's it's it's really weird because a lot of times before I'll be like, God, why when am I gonna catch a break? Right. And all these things are breaking for me. I know. You're you're catching the break, you're creating the break. We one of the things that happened, you know, Jana and we we skied all last year. Like we skied every day, twice a day. We went to Malala, we won the world championship.

Jana Shelfer

We totally immerse ourselves in this. Let's just say that.

Jason Shelfer

Right now we're going through the what some people might call unluck with cages breaking.

Jana Shelfer

At another cage break over the weekend.

Jason Shelfer

So we're right, we're today. We're going across the state of Florida to go get a welder to to build another cage to spec. It's it's not like it's a it's a fun thing. It's a it will be fun because we'll make it fun.

Jana Shelfer

Oh, it'll be so fun. It'll be in the car to get nice.

Jason Shelfer

It wasn't expected. Like this wasn't in the dreamscape that was planned. Correct. However, it will be part of the dreamscape because it's now just gonna be what's this part of the adventure? What do we do with it from here? How do I take the pen and start navigating in this lucid dream of the newness of this part of the adventure?

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

And that's it.

Jana Shelfer

Oh, life isn't happening to you. Life is happening for you, life is happening through you. And then there's a select few that get to the pinnacle where they're actually creating the life that is destined for them.
