Why Your Body Predicts Your Success (Before Your Brain Does)

Are you following a script you never agreed to? In this breakthrough episode of the Living Lucky® Podcast, Jason and Jana Banana reveal the silent driver behind your results: Subconscious Expectation.

If you’ve ever wondered why you stay "stuck" despite having all the self-help tools, the answer isn't in your head—it’s in your body. We explore a raw coaching moment where Jana discovered a hidden "Expectation of Resistance" that was quietly sabotaging her leadership and growth.

In This Episode, You Will Learn To:

  • Decode Body Signals: Why your nervous system reacts to opportunity with fear before your mind can even process it.
  • Identify Subconscious "Glitches": How old imprints from decades ago create "protective" programming that stops you from playing big.
  • Master the "Expectation Filter": Understand how your brain scans for proof of what you expect to happen, ignoring the miracles right in front of you.
  • Update Your Inner Software: Why you need to delete "old code" rather than just writing over it to achieve real personal development.

Living Lucky® Nuggets:

  • The Body Never Lies: When a coach asks the right question, your body will give the truth away through a chill, a tear, or a "punch of air" before you can say "I'm fine."
  • Manifesting Fears vs. Desires: You are always manifesting. The question is: Are you manifesting your faith in the good or your fear of the bad? (Believe in yourself)
  • Leading from the Middle: Avoiding the "Captain" role is often a sign of a hidden limiting belief about friction and conflict. (Believe in the people around you)
  • The Blind Spot Advantage: You can’t read the label from inside the jar. A great life coaching question doesn't give you the answer; it unlocks the door you didn't know was locked. (Believe in a higher power)

Stop bracing for rejection and start expecting the extraordinary. Hit play to update your internal operating system and start Living Lucky®!

Welcome To Living Lucky

Jana Shelfer

Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®. Good morning. I'm Jana. I'm Jason. And we are Living Lucky®.

Jason Shelfer

You are too.

Expectations Behind The Curtain

Jana Shelfer

What you expect is what you're gonna get. Oh, it's so simple and yet.

Jason Shelfer

Sometimes we we don't realize what's happening in the world because we have a lot of wants. I want this, I want this, I I really hope that this happens. And then back behind the curtain, back where every a lot of things are happening in our subconscious, we have these expectations of what's gonna happen that we don't want to bring to the front. And then we don't get what we want, we don't get what we hope for, we don't get what we tried so hard for, but we that expectation comes true.

A Coach Asks The Hard Question

Jana Shelfer

This hit me like a ton of bricks today. I I know we're a little late being uploaded this morning. I apologize. We've had a loaded morning.

Jason Shelfer

We had our coach over for a couple hours this morning. Got a lot of work done.

Jana Shelfer

She did some work on Jana Banana. She literally asked me when we were talking about a leadership role that is coming up, and I'm very hesitant to step into it. She said, Well, what do you expect? And when she said that, there was something that just overcame my body.

Jason Shelfer

And do you expect resistance stepping into a leadership role?

Jana Shelfer

Yeah, I expect resistance. She was like, Well, you're gonna get what you expect. And I thought, duh, we talk about this all the time in Living Lucky. If you expect miracles, you're gonna find miracles. If you expect the best, you're gonna find the best. If you expect love, joy, happiness, trust, belief, you're gonna find those things. And it also works on the other side of the coin. If you expect disappointment or resistance or rejection or if we tell ourselves we're gonna have a crappy time at the party, we're probably gonna find a crappy time when we get there.

Subconscious Imprints And Body Signals

Jason Shelfer

We're gonna find whatever rubs against us when we go there.

Jana Shelfer

And here's the thing is you can work on your thoughts, your conscious thoughts, you can work on your conscious feelings, you can work on your conscious beliefs. However, like Jason said, sometimes it's programming that is way back behind the curtain. A level that we It's 25 years ago. And the thing is, is when she asked me that question, I actually felt it in my body. I felt it in my body. My brain, my brain was saying, that's not me. Oh no, I I always expect the best.

Jason Shelfer

And you and typically you do, but it also you felt it in your body, and it I felt it take you to a specific place in time.

Jana Shelfer

Oh, yes. I mean, I can I can tell you exactly the three places it took me.

Jason Shelfer

You're like Marty McFly going back to the future.

Jana Shelfer

I have three experiences it took me, and I know exactly where that imprinted my subconscious mind, which I know that we've explained this many times before, but sometimes triggers happen because of past experiences. And it's just our body's way of protecting ourselves.

Jason Shelfer

And even though we've rewritten over the code, like I'm not, and this is me talking stuff that I don't I don't know anything about technology and rewriting over disk or information, but we rewrite over our hardwired stuff in our brains.

Jana Shelfer

But we shouldn't rewrite over the code.

Jason Shelfer

Right.

Jana Shelfer

We we should literally update the system completely.

Jason Shelfer

Update, yes, like let's get rid of that hard drive, let's delete it and let's start over with the new information. Like I've grown, this stuff doesn't serve me anymore. Let's take the whole system out, put a new one in, and start here. Yes. Like I've I've overcome all those difficulties, I've outgrown it, I've outgrown that shell. Let's get a new shell, let's be a car.

Jana Shelfer

And and what's so crazy is for me, it literally has to do with leadership. Now, you think of all the things that I have been doing, they all have to do with stepping into a leadership role. And it amazes me. Uh I have said some behind the scenes. I don't know if I've said it to all of you on our podcast, but there have been times behind the scenes where I have said to Jason, you know, we've had a lot of success, don't get me wrong, but I have also said, I am I'm a little surprised that we aren't on like really, really huge stadium stages.

Jason Shelfer

Why aren't we on Oprah yet? Like we're not we're not still back in the 90s and the early 2000s, but why aren't we on Letterman? Why aren't we I'm naming all these people that aren't on TV anymore because we've canceled TV. I don't even know who's on TV anymore, but it's like why aren't we on Saturday? Why aren't they talking about us on Saturday?

Jana Shelfer

And it makes sense now of why I've been holding myself back and I didn't even realize it.

Jason Shelfer

We are our we expect too much friction in that leadership role.

Jana Shelfer

And here I I mean I do a lot of work on myself.

Jason Shelfer

We both do, we both do. It's a constant thing move into that discomfort and move move towards that friction so we can figure out what is it, what is it that's kind of rubbing against us so we can unpack those little things in the back of the subconscious.

Blind Spots And Why Coaching Works

Jana Shelfer

And as we grow, as we learn, evolve, expand, we constantly are either creating new things or getting to deeper levels where we realize, oh, there's more, there's more, there's more to unpack.

Jason Shelfer

Thank you. More, please.

Jana Shelfer

There's more. That suitcase is deep. And what's so crazy is yesterday I was coaching um a young girl and she was experiencing something very, very similar. And I even said to her, well, if you expect the worst to happen, what's gonna happen?

Jason Shelfer

Yeah, if you focus all your energy on the worst to happen, you're probably gonna manifest that worst thing.

Jana Shelfer

You are gonna manifest your fears. You're either manifesting your fears or your desires.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah, you're manifesting the faith in the good or the fear in the bad.

Jana Shelfer

Oh I almost want to just hit my head and go, I'm gonna have a V8. I'm aging myself with that commercial.

Jason Shelfer

That's funny though, because we we often say exactly what we need to hear, but sometimes we don't hear ourselves saying it. We know it inherently.

Jana Shelfer

Because it's called a blind spot. We all have blind spots, it just means I'm human. And if I'd have known what not, I would have thought I was an AI robot.

Jason Shelfer

If I'd have known the how beneficial having a coach would be 25 years ago, probably still wouldn't have done it because it just didn't have enough sense back then. But it's it's been so great having someone else just help me just ask a question that unlocks a blind spot for me, you know?

Jana Shelfer

I'm telling you.

Jason Shelfer

And it still hits. I mean, and it's simple questions. Like the putting together of the words uh of do you expect to find resistance being in stepping into a leadership role? That's just a that's a simple question.

Jana Shelfer

That's a question that we wouldn't ask ourselves. But but I have to tell you, the awareness, you have to have the awareness. I think in a normal conversation, I would have said, of course not. I you know, I expect the best in people, and I expect to take the stage of confidence in myself. I've I've got this.

Jason Shelfer

I've done this a hundred times.

Jana Shelfer

However, I was really being vulnerable, transparent, and open, and I I actually felt it in my body first.

Jason Shelfer

Right.

Jana Shelfer

You said you you noticed it.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah, I well, I saw you. I I almost it felt like it someone just kind of punched you with a a a big push of air. Yeah, it was weird or interesting, I guess.

Jana Shelfer

Yeah, I even got a tear in my eye at one point.

Jason Shelfer

You can you see it with clients when they have those aha moments.

Jana Shelfer

I had an aha moment today.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah, it's I think they're great because it's an unlocking.

Jana Shelfer

Oh man. And I'm telling you, if if when I'm helping others, if they have those kind of moments like I have when people are helping me, that is unbelievable.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah, that's a it's a game changer. That's I love it so much. That's just a step towards Living Lucky® for me.

Jana Shelfer

What you expect is what you're going to find. Now, if you look through our podcast, you know that I probably have at least 20 titles around that topic.

Jason Shelfer

Yeah. Well, it's important. It's where you where your focus goes is where your energy goes.

Jana Shelfer

I have said that over and over.

Jason Shelfer

It's how many different ways can it be said so that someone understands it and so someone hears it a little bit differently.

Jana Shelfer

Well, what is the quote? If you're looking for a miracle, you're gonna find a miracle. If you're looking for what's wrong in the world, you're gonna find what's wrong.

Jason Shelfer

That's right.

Jana Shelfer

I mean, I don't know what the quote is. I I'm just paraphrasing.

Jason Shelfer

So there's a quote that's attributed to Albert Einstein's. There's no proof that he said it. And it this might may or may not be the quote, but it's there are people that see everything as a miracle, and there's people who see nothing as a miracle.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Why Leadership Triggers Resistance

Jason Shelfer

So it's it's what is it that you're looking for? Whatever you're looking for, you're gonna find. We can say, I want to find this, or I hope to find something, but you're gonna find what you expect to find. And oftentimes you'll stop looking where your expectation ends.

Jana Shelfer

And so just to fill you all in, because it kind of feels like we're talking around the topic instead of just filling you in, whenever it comes to stepping up into a leadership role, I often skirt the issue. Like I will sit on my hands, I will come up with a reason of why I can't.

Jason Shelfer

You'll lead from the middle.

Jana Shelfer

I will lead from the middle or by example, but I rarely will say, Yeah, count me in. Let me let me be the captain. Yeah, let me take over this group. Uh, I'll I'll do the work.

Jason Shelfer

Give me the give me the checkbook and everything, and I'm I'll be 100% in charge.

Jana Shelfer

Yes, I don't I don't like being in charge.

Jason Shelfer

That is not you'll take you'll take the responsibility, but you don't want responsibility for other people. Yes is the thing.

Jana Shelfer

Yes.

Jason Shelfer

Like you'll you'll I've seen you take full, like, like I'll just why don't I just hire someone else to do the whole thing?

Jana Shelfer

Yes, and then I'll do all the work.

Jason Shelfer

And and even do all the work.

Jana Shelfer

I don't mind doing all the work.

Jason Shelfer

Like, I don't want to rely on the other people in this room because they can't come to a decision, they can't do like Yes. Like, I don't want to have to wrangle everybody, and I also don't have to deal with their scheduling, I don't want to deal with the nonsense. So I get it. Like there's and the one of the problems is is there's it's all adults, and this isn't everyone's primary, like you don't it's not if you're just taking on a voluntary leadership title, there's no authority in it. So if you don't have the authority, assuming it doesn't give it to you. So that's that's another whole topic. But if you're expecting this is uh we're getting off topic here, so what you're expecting is what you're gonna get.

Jana Shelfer

Yeah. And and and so I always I always duck like when it's time to to be in charge. I'm always like, not it, not it. Not it, not it. I'm sorry, yes, please.

Jason Shelfer

I'll read I'll lead from the middle.

Jana Shelfer

I really cannot. I will contribute, I I will be your best follower, which is actually a way for me to lead from following, lead and you'll be a full supporter from the middle, yes. And so anyway, today a coach happened to be here and she says to me, Jana, are you expecting resistance? And the answer was absolutely, and I hate that answer.

Jason Shelfer

So now we get to unpack it.
