Reclaiming Your Drive: Turning the "Work" Burden into a Winning Strategy
Is the word "work" stealing your energy? In this episode of Living Lucky®, Jason and Jana Banana dismantle the baggage around labor and replace it with conscious abundance. We trace how curiosity turned into a "should" and show you how to flip the script.
Learn to use NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) to audit your internal code. Discover why swapping "have to" for "choose to" is a neurological command for growth. If you’re stuck in "sludge energy," these mindset tools will help you meet your future self today.
In this episode, you will learn to:
- Audit Your Language: See how "cost" wires you for survival, while "investment" wires you for success.
- Trace Your Work Script: Reclaim the natural curiosity you had before "learning" became "judgment."
- Break Habituation: Use novelty to keep your energy high and your spirit evolving.
Nuggets:
- Future Self Mapping: Don't wait for results to feel successful. Embody that energy now to lay your stepping stones. (Believe in yourself).
- Failure is Fertilizer: Failure isn't a loss—it’s an investment in your spiritual curriculum. (Believe in your circumstances).
- Precision Over Pressure: If "work" feels heavy, redefine it as "contribution." Your body reacts to your definitions. (Believe in a higher power).
- Be Greater Than: Use breath and intention to release "sludge" and step into your expansion. (Believe in the people around you).
Stop sleepwalking through your routine. Hit play to change your perspective and start Living Lucky® today!
- How to change your relationship with work, overcoming work-related anxiety, future self visualization, conscious abundance practices, reframing failure as growth.
- "How can I stay motivated at a job I dislike?" Shift your focus from "labor" to "learning, growing, and evolving." Use the Zig Ziglar principle: do more than you're paid for now to build the skills your future self will need. By reframing the job as an "investment" in your skill set, you reclaim your energy.
- "What is the impact of language on success?" Language serves as the steering wheel for your nervous system. Phrases like "I have to" trigger a survival response, while "I choose to" signals agency an

Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®. Good morning. I'm Jana. And we are Living Lucky®. You are too. We're taking this conscious abundance class. It has been so fascinating. Would you not agree?
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, it's great hearing someone else's articulation of what exactly what we talk about every day.
Jana Shelfer:It is tuning in to abundance, prosperity, and wealth.
Jason Shelfer:And it's the being of your future self. It's the becoming of your future self and saying, I'm just, I'm here now, and I'm gonna, I'm on my way to meet you, future self, whatever future self you want.
Jana Shelfer:Yes. And we can actually choose what thoughts, what feelings, what energy that we want to be, have, embody.
Jason Shelfer:100%. If you look at where you are now, you can literally trace your footsteps, trace your actions back and say, How did I get here? And you can see the stepping stones that you took to get to wherever you are and to have whatever you have. And if that's true, then you can imagine whoever your future self is, and then start laying the path and the footsteps to that.
Jana Shelfer:So, Dave, our mentor in this group, he asked the question, When did you first start working?
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:And to really think about that, I started going back, I'm like, oh, well, when was my first job? And then I started thinking, no, no, no, no. Even before that, I remember my dad telling me, your job is to get good grades. And I also remembered that many times we ask kids, what is your job?
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:And they say, My job is to love my brother. Right. My job is to eat my vegetables, my job.
Jason Shelfer:My job is to have fun, is to hug my mom.
Jana Shelfer:You know, like they would say these answers, and I'd be like, Oh my gosh, that's that's a big responsibility.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and if you take it back even further to like a newborn baby, yes, they're working to communicate when they're hungry. They're working to communicate or to start walking or to start talking.
Jana Shelfer:I mean, you start working as soon as you're born when you really start thinking about it.
Jason Shelfer:And what it is is you've stepped into something new, and now you have to learn, grow, and evolve. That's in every aspect of life, it's about learning, growing, and evolving.
Jana Shelfer:Now, luckily, I love to learn, grow, and evolve. Right. Even though it is scary and there are challenges and it is uncomfortable at times. However, I have had to consciously challenge myself to continue to grow and evolve.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and I think one of the biggest things is sometimes we we lose awareness of the learning growing and evolving, and we get stuck in the just doing and and kind of being what's what's happening. Like, does that make sense? Oh where to me, a hundred percent. Like we're we just get up and it's that sameness, it's that law of habituation where now I'm here and I'm just gonna get up and do the same thing every single day, and then I'm gonna get bitter about it because I'm not focused on the learning, growing and evolving. Yes, and I'm not telling myself, this is incredible. I'm every day I have an opportunity to learn something new, yes, to learn how to do whatever I'm doing differently or better, enjoy it more, so I grow. Yes, and then I I mean it's kind of Zig Ziggler says, do what you're not paid for, and one day you'll be paid more for what more than you ever imagined for what you're doing. That's you know, and that's I do believe that, and that's the person that is in there and loving their life, they're being, yes, and they're being greater than, you know.
Jana Shelfer:Oh my gosh. I I I needed to hear that. Well be greater, be greater than because I even in the last 24 hours, I've had a couple situations where I've I've it's almost like I've felt the sludge energy, and I'm like, oh, this is getting stuck in my body, and I've had to really consciously breathe and say, Okay, let this go. This is just a thought, this is just a feeling, let it go, choose something better.
Jason Shelfer:And subconsciously, we all know, we all have this deep, deep inner knowing that we are greater than, yeah, you know, and that's where that question of is this all there is comes from? Because I know that I'm built for and made for bigger and better things, a bigger and better life.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, I love, I love what you're saying. I also feel like we have veered a little bit off of the topic of Yeah, work.
Jason Shelfer:Work. So it's just I think it's and the it I don't feel like it's a uh divergent from that topic. I think what it is is what story are we telling ourselves? And also are we aware of the words that we use all the time?
Jana Shelfer:I think the words we use. Jason and I studied neurolinguistic programming, NLP, and it is the language, it's almost a cue of what programming is happening inside. So I can talk to anybody for 10 minutes, and just by the language they use, I can really tell what they dread doing, what they like doing, I can tell by their energy, I can even tell their social class.
Jason Shelfer:Well, you can get a sense of how they're showing up for life. Am I showing up as if I'm gonna get punched in the face? Am I showing up like I'm I'm scared of trying like all these little things, or are they showing up with all their energy, all their excitement, all their love and passion, and just ready to squeeze the juice out of life?
Jana Shelfer:Right? That's what I want to choose.
Jason Shelfer:So it's and I think with the words, whatever words we're using on a regular basis, create the story that we're telling ourselves. Because what are stories made of? They're made of words, right?
Jana Shelfer:Because, and here's why we use words, and inside we have our own definition. Do you know what I'm saying?
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, especially with the English language.
Jana Shelfer:And sometimes a word, for example, uh oh, I don't mean to side rail us, but we were at Toastmasters this past week, and I was asked to do some extemporaneous speaking, and they asked me to compare gratitude and light. Well, for me, it's one and the same, right? And so I had a really hard time, and then when I think about light, my first thing was thinking of the light in the room, the electricity in the room. Do you know what I'm saying? Well, that's what brings you out of the door. And then as I started speaking, it kind of morphed into source.
Jason Shelfer:Yep.
Jana Shelfer:Light is source, and then it comes from beyond the light, yes, and it shows us the way, and and there's just so many connotations. Well, how about the nuances of words and what the meaning that we put to them is is very important.
Jason Shelfer:On the same note, in that Toastmasters meeting, I was given about failure and fertilizer. Yes, and I mentioned that failure and fertilizer both cost us.
Jana Shelfer:Yes. And you knew immediately You even said cost us with, and then you added time, resources, money.
Jason Shelfer:Right.
Jana Shelfer:And there was someone in the audience that took that very literally, and what you really meant to say was we need to invest.
Jason Shelfer:Yes. So you're investing in fertilizer to make your crops better, you're investing in failure because failure is a stepping stone.
Jana Shelfer:Yes.
Jason Shelfer:So you knew because we spend so much time together, and you knew some sometimes I use words that aren't the best, which happens.
Jana Shelfer:Well, both of us, because we we know what we're trying to say, but is learning how to communicate.
Jason Shelfer:But also you bringing that to my awareness was critical because I need to, I uh it would be more beneficial for me to just use the word investment when I mean investment.
Jana Shelfer:Which is why I want to wrap this around. Because in our class that we were taking, when he threw out when did you first start working? It's funny how work has morphed.
Jason Shelfer:Turned into a bad word.
Jana Shelfer:As we get older.
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:And not for everybody, not for everybody. However, uh, for a lot of people that we speak with, yeah, it's become that four the other four-letter work. Whereas when we were babies, it was just natural for us to be curious and to learn, want to learn, grow, evolve. Yes, which really was exciting, in a way, our work. That was the work. 100%. And then I know when I went through, you know, my enlightening transformation, when people say do the work, they're talking about a totally different thing. They're talking about inside, yes, uh, be curious, become um do some introspection, learn more about who you are. Learn about why I am having these feelings and what is the subconscious pattering. And there's just so many, there's so many nuances to the word.
Jason Shelfer:I can remember when I changed the meaning of the word work when I started getting homework. Now, some people are gonna change that meaning when they have a car payment or they have a mortgage or they have a rent payment or or they're not putting groceries on the table. So they've got, they have to go to work to pay the bills. And that's a survival mechanism.
Jana Shelfer:Just using the word have is a big clue there.
Jason Shelfer:For me, it was getting homework and then feeling like I'm being judged and being graded on where I stand in society in the classroom society, you know? And so it took a lot of the fun out of the learning because I was learning a little bit slower. And I wasn't as focused on this pattern of learning that was prescribed in the school system. I was super smart, but I was it was like the it wasn't the fun part of what I wanted to learn and how I wanted to grow. So I started changing my story around what work meant, which changed my outlook going forward from there at work. So it's just going back and saying, okay, well, understanding now how fun learning, growing, and evolving is, and how important it is to my soul, now I could, it's like one of those things, if I knew now what I didn't know then, yeah, you know.
Jana Shelfer:Let's put a nail in this because we we've taken up enough time. So what I hear you saying is that when you uh stop and really become consciously aware of the word work and attach it to your values. Yes. Maybe, I mean, at this stage in life, my work seriously is to have fun, to be my best, and to impact as many people as I can.
Jason Shelfer:And have the best experience of life ever. And I think that's it. So, how how do we just start living into that a little bit more?
Jana Shelfer:It's almost like we get to a phase in our life where we need to take off the glasses and we need to clean up the wipe the limb and go back to what Wayne Dyer says time and time again when you change the way you look at things.
Jason Shelfer:The things you look at change.
Jana Shelfer:Have a great day.
