Sustainable Goals for the New Year
Stop the Resolution Relapse: The 7-Minute Map to Your Best Year Yet 🚀
Most resolutions fail by January 21st because they prioritize intensity over consistency. Discover the Living Lucky® system to turn "golden year" dreams into reality by replacing the "doom loop" with a visual scoreboard for success.
You will learn:
- 7-Minute Goal Dump: Use a timed sprint to bypass perfectionism and surface true desires.
- Goal Horizoning: Map 1, 5, and 10-year priorities to eliminate overwhelm and stop the "juggle."
- Time-Chunking: Turn massive "elephants" into bite-sized, scheduled daily actions.
Mindset Nuggets for Sustainable Success:
- Consistency > Intensity: "Drip-irrigate" your goals; fire hoses cause burnout. (Believe in yourself).
- The Wall of Goals: Visibility nudges action. Keep your scoreboard in sight to trigger daily progress.
- Beat the 21-Day Dip: Science-backed guardrails to keep you moving when initial motivation fades. (Believe in your circumstances).
- Ecosystem Protection: Favor incremental adaptation over system-shocking makeovers to prevent self-sabotage.
- Momentum Syncing: Align priorities with the people around you to multiply your results.

- Self-help, personal development, life coaching, mindset shift, positive thinking, limiting beliefs, goal setting.
- How to keep New Year’s resolutions, sustainable success habits, consistency vs intensity, visual goal tracking, relationship goal alignment.
- "Why do New Year's resolutions fail?" Most fail by day 21 because of "intensity shock"—making changes too massive for your personal ecosystem. Success requires small, consistent actions over raw willpower.

Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®.
Jason Shelfer:Good morning. I'm Jana. I'm Jason.
Jana Shelfer:And we are Living Lucky®. You are too. It is the last day of the year.
Jason Shelfer:Can you feel it?
Jana Shelfer:And the first day of the rest of your life.
Jason Shelfer:Oh, that's so good. That can scare me goosebumps. That's kind of how I wake up every morning.
Jana Shelfer:We talk about this every year, but I cannot stress how important getting your dreams on paper, setting goals, and chunking them down into baby steps. And you can do that at this time, like this is the perfect time right now, is to get out that year long calendar and to start saying, Hey, let's let's accomplish this this year.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah. I looking back at 2025, that that was probably so I call it our golden year. I mean it was the biggest, best year.
Jana Shelfer:We're going to continue to have golden years.
Jason Shelfer:Right? Yeah. Because now we've got we've we've kind of figured out this formula and we've almost perfected it. I don't think we have perfected it because we're going to keep hitting these challenges. But knowing that when we put these goals on the wall, I mean, I love that you brought in these big stick it notes or stick-up notes that are two feet by three feet long.
Jana Shelfer:Okay, so just to clarify and let everyone know, I literally wallpaper our walls. In the living room goals. I've been doing this now for about six years. Yeah. I started wallpapering my goals over in the dining area. And I started just putting them, putting them on little sticket notes on the mirror.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah. Almost like a um just a graph of where are we going, how are we gonna get there.
Jana Shelfer:The problem with that was sometimes we wouldn't eat in the dining area, sometimes we would eat in the living room, and sometimes our dining area got so that we wouldn't really spend a lot of time in that particular little nook room.
Jason Shelfer:And if you're not hitting your goals, you will start avoiding your dining area or wherever your those goals are.
Jana Shelfer:So because I had written them small, you know, they that sometimes I would just roll on by them. Do you know what I'm saying?
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, it becomes like the billboards on the on the highway to work.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, and also that first the first couple years that I did this, I didn't have a rhyme or a reason. I was just putting things on the wall like start a YouTube channel and you know what I'm saying, write a book.
Jason Shelfer:They were kind of like five-year goals or ten-year goals.
Jana Shelfer:Literally 10-year goals that I had put all in one little area. Yes. And then the way we've honed this process, which has been really great, and we started by taking a workshop from a life coach that was evolved around our best year yet. Do you remember that book? Best year yet. And in that book, it goes through questions that you can ask yourself. What went well this past year? What might I have done better? How can I be more efficient in the future? And then it also gives you exercises on how to maybe dig a little deeper for those goals that you didn't even really know you wanted.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and also why you want them.
Jana Shelfer:So I know one little exercise that has helped me so much just in the past two weeks is setting a timer. Now you can set the time, but I right now am gonna suggest the lucky number seven.
Jason Shelfer:Seven minutes.
Jana Shelfer:Seven minutes. Set a timer for seven minutes. And in that seven minutes, just start brainstorming and writing as many goals that you want to it's a goal dump. It is a gold dump, and it is just getting them out of your system. And what happens is, yeah, you might have those top ones, like, oh, you know what? I want to get in shape.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah. I want to travel the world. You know? So there there will be what you'll find in a in a goal dump is there will be 10-year goals, there'll be 20-year goals, there'll be 10-year goals, there'll be five-year goals, there'll be this year goals. There might even be this week goals or this day goals.
Jana Shelfer:Yes. Like here's something that I discovered. I really want to go through my house and just start, you know, I I'm always about decolitering. I really want to do a little more this year, and I want to do a different room every year. Anyway, that's a different topic. But you sometimes you don't really know what is really deep down in your soul.
unknown:Yeah.
Jana Shelfer:We we always don't know what we want. We always don't say and I don't know what's going on.
Jason Shelfer:And giving yourself a time limit takes away the pressure of perfection.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, it does. It's like, okay, I'm just I'm just brainstorming, I'm just dumping these out. And then after that seven minutes, then you start going through and circle the top five that really speak to you, or circle the ones that you want, like Jason said, circle the ones that you think maybe, oh, that's a 2026 goal, that's a five-year plan, that's a 10-year plan.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah. So one thing I like to do is there's there's two setups here. Is one is you can circle your top five. So those are like your your most important things. And that's that's great. You want to know that so you can look at that in your windshield as you go through life, right? Excuse me. And then the other part of that is you want to separate into your 10, five, and one year goals and circle the top three in each of those categories. So now you can start time chunking each of those into your calendar. Because that's where when you started putting dates on those big post-it notes and saying, I'm gonna have I'm gonna achieve this by this date, and or get this equipment by this date, it was like, okay, it's in the calendar. It has it's gonna get done. Now, how do we take bite-sized pizza pieces of this elephant and chew it up?
Jana Shelfer:Bite-sized pieces is the key. And I cannot say this loud enough or bold enough, but sometimes we think in order to accomplish a goal, we have to go balls to the wall. You're in a NASCAR race. And you know, like sometimes I and this is just an easy example, and I say it all the time, but sometimes, you know, like we have a wedding to go to, and I I want to fit into this dress. So sometimes I'll think, oh, I can't eat for five days.
Jason Shelfer:But on that sixth day, I'm going to the cheesecake factory.
Jana Shelfer:That's not the way of doing it. That's not because what's so crazy is if I just cut out sweets or cut out sugar or cut out these Christmas cookies that I've been eating, then all of a sudden I'm there without even realizing it. It doesn't take so much stress, and I can also then accomplish other goals while I'm fitting into this dress.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, it's not about the intensity, it's about consistency. And then you get to create this life change.
Jana Shelfer:Okay, before we go on, it this is this is something that I have learned. Consistency beats perfection, consistency beats intensity. It beats it every time. It's consistency, consistency, consistency. And sometimes when we get caught up on, oh yeah, well, it's not good enough, or it's not or it's gotta happen now. Right? Consistency, small chunks and consistency. It's the old book where the turtle wins against the hair. I don't I don't even know if I've ever read that book.
Jason Shelfer:I know I have.
Jana Shelfer:Okay.
Jason Shelfer:It's been years, but and I get the point. It's uh it's like trying to water a plant. You know, pretend your goals are a plant. Would you want to take a fire hose to the plant?
Jana Shelfer:Yes.
Jason Shelfer:Or would you want to water it consistently over time when it needs it?
Jana Shelfer:It's same with your teeth.
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:Right?
Jason Shelfer:Sometimes brush them consistency because brushing them 30 times before your monthly dentist appointment.
Jana Shelfer:Or going in for a deep cleaning, you know, at the dentist isn't gonna help. Is not gonna negate the fact that we haven't brushed our teeth for the last 30 days.
Jason Shelfer:Right. Really? Now you're panicking and you're like, I'm gonna floss every day for the next five days because I have a dentist appointment coming up. Which I will be transparent. Sometimes that happens. For me, Jana flosses all like three or four times a day. And I'm like, she's flossing for both of us.
Jana Shelfer:All right, just so you know, that's going on our wall this year. That's going on our wall is hygiene, teeth hygiene.
Jason Shelfer:Gentle hygiene.
Jana Shelfer:Ah, we hygiene. Uh no, it has nothing to do with gene. But Gene, we appreciate you listening.
Jason Shelfer:Well, the truth of the matter is, is most of this new year's energy, this this things will be different this year, yes, is gone in 21 days. It takes three weeks for it to just dissipate, and you've forgotten about it, you're back into your same old system.
Jana Shelfer:This is science. This is science. And the reason I know it's science because it shows up in our insurance policy.
unknown:Right.
Jana Shelfer:Tell them what you learned.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, so the every every year, uh pretty much by January 21st, New Year's resolutions are out the window.
Speaker:Yes.
Jason Shelfer:I mean, that's a that's just statistically what happens. But if you will take these goals, whittle them down, like you have your whole list, whittle them down to those three, your top five, and then the first year, what are your top three things? Your five-year goals, what are your top three things? Your tenure goals, what are your top three things? Now you have something that's manageable. And when we talk about diet, like when you're talking about diet and exercise, so many people are gonna go buy it a gym membership and they're gonna go every day. I know or they're gonna say, I'm gonna go three or four times a week, and then they get burnt out.
Jana Shelfer:Because what happens is a shock. It's a shock to our whole ecosystem.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, like your personal ecosystem. Think of your body, your mind, your soul, your spirit, and what you like every day. I think we feel like we've put in a day. There's a the majority of us think, hey, you know what? I'm tired at the end of the day. I'm I there's not a lot of energy left. So what am I gonna do? I'm gonna throw a bunch of things on top of this, trying to gain energy, and I'm really gonna deplete my resources because it's a shock to the ecosystem. This is like throwing uh a hundred gallons of chlorine in a small pool.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, you're so right.
Jason Shelfer:You know, and it's like don't get in that pool because that pool is jacked up for a while. Okay. It's gonna have to work itself out. However, if you incrementally add that chlorine consistently, then you don't worry about the algae, the mole, any of that stuff.
Jana Shelfer:Now, one last thing that I want to wrap this podcast up with is you will be surprised at how far you can go when you just do little bits every single day. And I hate to always bring up my skiing, but I am the world champion.
Jason Shelfer:Right. And the athlete of the year.
Jana Shelfer:I just want to say that in the last year, that's what we did with my skiing. We just showed up a little bit every single day. We didn't go ski for eight hours on one day. We just would go out and we would do one set or maybe two sets, and then we'd come in.
Jason Shelfer:But they were like 30 or 45 minutes. That's it.
Jana Shelfer:And there were some times when I said, Oh yeah, but I don't feel like I, you know, like my muscles aren't totally exhausted. So maybe we didn't do it hard enough. Maybe we didn't do long enough. However, we just kept showing up every single day. Every single day.
Jason Shelfer:So big.
Jana Shelfer:And I find the same with my with our podcasts. I find the same with our speaking, with everything that I try to do. If I just show up for a little bit every single day. With purpose and intensity, you will look back and go, Oh my gosh, look how far I've come.
Jason Shelfer:So big. And you will get there. Like that's the thing is once you put the pen in the map of where you want to go, and then you you put in the mile.
Jana Shelfer:So you might surprise yourself.
Jason Shelfer:You will surprise yourself and you'll get there.
Jana Shelfer:Sometimes when Jason and I do this, we we actually surprise ourselves with how far we go. And then actually, on our next podcast, I want to share a little secret that we've learned in once you start getting your own goals on the wall, then to start finding synchronicities in maybe your spouse's goal or an accountability partner's goal or someone in the family's goal. And then you start working together and then you're unstoppable.
Jason Shelfer:So good.
Jana Shelfer:Thanks for joining us.
