Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®
Jason Shelfer:Good morning.
Jana Shelfer:I'm Jana, I'm Jason and we are Living Lucky®
Jason Shelfer:You are too.
Jana Shelfer:On rough days when you feel like you can't take it anymore, remind yourself that your track record for surviving a shit storm is 100%. That's so big. That is the quote of the day.
Jason Shelfer:That's so big because oftentimes, when we're going through the storm, it feels like, oh my gosh, this is the one that's going to take me down. Yes, and we catastrophize it in the moment because it's hard to get objective about it.
Jana Shelfer:This is so good, but now that I have been reminded of this, it actually makes me very proud of myself and I look back and go yeah, that's right, I've been through it. And you're a freaking champion because you have I've been through menopause, I mean anyone that's gone through menopause your power has just escalated. That's my thought.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and it felt in the time that you were going through it like, oh my God, what is going on here?
Jana Shelfer:I mean.
Jason Shelfer:Everything is going like I'm sweating, I'm moody, all these different things happening and it's like will I ever get through this?
Jana Shelfer:Even as of recently, Jason and I have been through a couple of things and you actually turned to me and you said you know what, If that would have happened to us 10 years ago, it would have been. It would have felt so devastating, it would have been huge. But the way we just handled that and went on and I mean one, was where I got diarrhea on the airplane.
Jason Shelfer:Are you with me? Yeah, 100%, it could have been. A it could have been a.
Jana Shelfer:oh my God, I'm so embarrassed I'm never getting on a plane again.
Jason Shelfer:Right, let me off here, but we 50,000 feet.
Jana Shelfer:But the way we worked together and the way we we laughed about it in the moment, even though it was really devastating. That's crazy To be able to laugh about it in the moment Like, oh my gosh, I'm going to have to borrow some stranger's pants. Yeah, like this lady is literally opening up her bag saying do you need some pants?
Jason Shelfer:Who's got some yoga pants?
Jana Shelfer:I've noticed you've been dripping on the way to the toilet.
Jason Shelfer:You didn't. You actually didn't drip on the way to the toilet, okay, but it felt like it.
Jana Shelfer:It felt like it and I, literally I thought that it was much worse in my mind. At any rate, we got through it.
Jason Shelfer:That's a literal shit storm.
Jana Shelfer:Seriously, why did my mind go there right?
Jana Shelfer:That's because of the quote, but I will say that the way we talked about it and remembered it afterwards really helped me as well. So not only in the moment when we were kind of laughing and saying, you know, this too shall pass. And then when we got off the plane and literally, you know, got our bags and got to the car, did a little cleaning up at the airport and got to the car, it felt like we talked about it in a way, not that it was this huge wound that we have to overcome, that's big. We talked about it in a way like, oh my God, we just created a story that nobody will believe yeah, and I think that's where counting your micro wins is huge.
Jason Shelfer:Where counting your micro wins is huge Because so often we tell the story from the storm, from what happened to me, instead of how I overcame and how I, how I won the moments, the little moments within. So it's like where am I protecting myself or where am I defeating myself? Or, I guess, where am I raising myself up or where am I putting myself down?
Jana Shelfer:Let me repeat this On rough days, when you feel like you just can't take it anymore, it's those come on, take me away. Days. Those days, remind yourself that your track record for surviving a shit storm is 100% because we're here, yeah, and I think you know, go ahead.
Jason Shelfer:So my thought on this is a lot of times when we're in the storm, we start counting raindrops, like we start counting how many things are happening to me, and we build this big evidence pile of all the devastation, all the wreckage, all the things that are happening during the storm, instead of how I made it through this moment, like how I got through just maybe this minute, sometimes when we're in it, it's like give yourself credit for making it to the next minute.
Jana Shelfer:That's funny. You bring this up because I learned this when I was a kid, and I think my dad is the one that taught it to me. But when things seemed tough, I started to slow the processing down in my mind. It's not that I was slowing time, but I was slowing the processing where I would just make it through the next hour, just make it through the next hour. Okay, so it started out I'm just going to make it through today. And then when today would get tough, I would say I'm just going to make it through the next hour. And when that hour was like I can't do it, then I started literally looking at the clock going can I make it through the next minute?
Jason Shelfer:I'm stronger than the next minute.
Jana Shelfer:Can I make it through the next second? And you can literally chunk it down and you start. It's almost a mini way of of building confidence in yourself because you're like well, wait a minute, I just made it through that second. Can I make it through five?
Jason Shelfer:more Back in 2004 when I quit smoking yes, that was like the addiction had me, but it was. I had to tell myself I'm stronger than this next minute, I'm stronger than these next 10 minutes so that I could say I don't. I know I want to stop smoking, but it got so hard and then, oftentimes, when I would relapse, it was because I quote unquote said I deserve this. Now I knew I didn't want to be a smoker.
Jana Shelfer:We often say I deserve a treat, yeah, and we treat ourselves like shit. And then we go and smoke or we go and drink alcohol or we go and eat For me it's eating candy, or eating something with bread.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, I love Give me some of those nasty carbs.
Jana Shelfer:Not the good ones. Breaded carbs Give me some of those nasty carbs. And so then, if you really stop and think about it, we say, oh, I deserve a treat.
Jason Shelfer:And then the question is am I?
Jana Shelfer:treating myself well.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, if you, if you feel guilty at all after your quote, unquote, treat, it's your subconscious saying this doesn't align with my goals, this doesn't align with where I'm going.
Jana Shelfer:No wonder I feel guilty after every freaking meal. That's funny. Thanks for bringing that to my attention, because I literally sometimes go to bed and I'm feeling that it is, it's the guilt.
Jason Shelfer:It's a little bit of guilt or shame. Like if you knew that you were eating if you're doing everything right with your diet. Let's say, our goal is to lose 100 pounds.
Jana Shelfer:Oh my gosh, Lose 10 pounds. Let's lose, jana.
Jason Shelfer:Right. Your subconscious knows what it takes to do that. We know what it takes to do everything Like. We know what it takes to be rich, wealthy, healthy, all these things, and we don't do what. We know why. Because a lot of times we're living in the storm and we're not counting our wins. Because when we have that ultimate confidence and when we have, when we have been counting our wins and recognize that we're champions for being here today, we can say I'm going to go anywhere. I want to go Because it doesn't matter what kind of storm comes, it doesn't matter what's happening, I'm a badass and I can do it. I have 100% track record of surviving every shit storm that comes my way.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, you're going to remember that so I can go anywhere. No, in fact I think I'm an expert at surviving shit storms. I do Figuratively and literally. I do think that I mean, we've been through it, you and I have been through it and I feel like From the outside looking in, you wouldn't know, oh, but we've had 10 years of it.
Jason Shelfer:Right.
Jana Shelfer:And now things are getting really good for us. But the reason things are getting really good for us is because we literally took the time, the effort, the energy, the money to dive in and learn the tools of how to overcome adversity better.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and I think one of the big things is, once you get so accustomed to surviving the storm, you start creating your own weather. So when you see the clouds coming in, you change, you create new circumstances and new thoughts and feelings around it so that the outside, your reality, changes.
Jana Shelfer:So now, when you have confidence and you get better at surviving the storm. You're no longer hiding out in the hole in the ditch.
Jason Shelfer:You know you're going to get through it. There's confidence in knowing you're going to get through it, so it doesn't really matter what happens. It's just another game.
Jana Shelfer:And you bounce back faster.
Jason Shelfer:So fast.
Jana Shelfer:It's like a muscle you bounce back faster, you recover faster and it almost seems like just another workout and it takes less effort.
Jason Shelfer:So the more you do it, the easier it becomes. The quicker it happens and you're back on track before you even realized you fell off, oh my gosh, I didn't realize I needed this conversation this morning, but you have really.
Jana Shelfer:This has really helped me.
Jason Shelfer:Well, and somebody out there right now is thinking but you don't understand what I'm going through. Oh, I know, I know, you know what I'm saying. Because we did this, because we all feel that we did this at the beginning.
Jana Shelfer:We all feel that and we all think you know what Nobody could possibly understand and as you start reaching out for someone to hear you, help you and hold you, you really do think I am alone on this island and my situation is so unique that nobody could possibly understand the feelings that I am having and how this has all come together in this giant hurricane.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and once you start working through this process and once you've decided to get into this, recognizing that you're a champion, recognizing that you are built for greatness and a purpose, then you will start recognizing I can get through it. Nothing's going to keep me from where I'm going.
Jana Shelfer:Let's read it one more time On rough days. So if you're out there and you're having a rough day, or a rough week, or a rough month. When you feel like I just can't take it anymore which we've all had that thought, we've all had that feeling Remind yourself that your track record for surviving a shit storm is 100%. That's an A plus, baby. You are the valedictorian of life circumstances. There you go. Thanks for joining us. Keep Living Lucky®
