Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®.
Jason Shelfer:Good morning.
Jana Shelfer:I'm Jana, I'm Jason and we are Living Lucky®.
Jana Shelfer:You are too. We're at summer camp. Woohoo. When was the last time you went to adult summer camp?
Jason Shelfer:Did you ride the bus, did your parents take you or did you fly?
Jana Shelfer:And I have to tell you we are sunburned, we are sore and we are exhausted.
Jason Shelfer:And my feet are muddy, like it's going to take some special effort to get the mud out of my toenails.
Jana Shelfer:We stink.
Jason Shelfer:We are literally like kids at summer camp I don't stink to myself until, like, I start taking my shirt off and then I'm like, oh, I have clothes literally hung out all over our room air air air dry cleaning, dry cleaning every article of clothing that we have has somehow gotten wet.
Jason Shelfer:It's got a funk on it. And then we brought our dog, and our dog has not only been jumping in the lake, but then started drinking pond water Now this is the thing she's got this beautiful mountain, clear lake water and she goes to the nasty mud puddles and drinks the mud puddles that the trucks have been driving through. And then she wakes up at 2, 3, and 4 o'clock in the morning with the squirts With diarrhea.
Jana Shelfer:She's like I got to go and the thing about it is that we are on this hotel. It's not like we can just open the door and let her out.
Jason Shelfer:And she thinks, every time we go to the elevator she's like no, I'm not going on there, I'm going out this door to the ice maker.
Jana Shelfer:I've got to go. I've got to go, tt I've got to go now.
Jason Shelfer:I've got to go TT out my butt.
Jana Shelfer:So I guess what we're talking about today is just pure summer camp and the energy that that brings.
Jason Shelfer:Well, because you know that feeling if you've ever been to summer camp, that feeling right when you drive in, right when you go through the gates of summer camp and we had that when we pulled into this place and we drove over this bridge that was a canopy bridge. Yes, Like this, old it was, I don't even know how like bridges of Madison County type bridge.
Jana Shelfer:It is. It is the bridge of Madison County. You know that movie where Meryl Streep and-.
Jason Shelfer:Clint Eastwood getting dirty, were having an affair.
Jana Shelfer:While the family was at the fair, they were having an affair.
Jason Shelfer:There you go, and so when you go through the bridge you end up in narnia on the other side.
Jana Shelfer:like it is just beautiful it is like that is a great description it's.
Jason Shelfer:You just went through the the porthole into this heavenly amazing no place, the minute.
Jana Shelfer:We came out the other side of that bridges of madison county bridge, all of a sudden we see fog on the lake.
Jason Shelfer:Deer are all around us bunnies are just hopping around I thought you're gonna say humping, but I didn't see them, but they were hopping around and it did.
Jana Shelfer:It felt majestic, it was majestic it was a.
Jason Shelfer:It was a magical place. Yeah, mountains all around Trees. It was heaven on earth. And the owners, like the proprietors of this property, are Tommy and Amy Newman, and it is incredible and I got to see some of the work that they put into the place and I was flabbergasted, purely flabbergasted.
Jana Shelfer:So the point of our podcast today, though, is that summer camp energy yes, and adults can have it both reminded us. For me it reminded me of I went to I guess it was I don't know if it was bible school camp or vacation bible school it wasn't even vacation bible school. You go away church camp church camp okay, is that what you call it, church?
Jason Shelfer:so I had church camp and you go away for like two, two weeks or four weeks. You had the option okay, mine was just spend the night.
Jana Shelfer:Mine was just a week okay, yes, yes, you learn to dance hello and yes, you learn silly little chants, you know, like Mabel Mabel strong and able.
Jason Shelfer:Get your elbows off the table this is not a horse's stall.
Jana Shelfer:This is a first class dining hall. Round the table.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, so we had centenary camp, which was our Methodist summer camp, and it was a one week long camp. It was very different than the camp I went to in North Carolina where you go for two weeks or four weeks and they had the big lake and the blob that you would jump off the thing and shoot somebody off the other end.
Jana Shelfer:You always talk about that.
Jason Shelfer:It was fun. It was so fun.
Jana Shelfer:It kind of is like a do you know how dirty dancing? Yes, has that environment where it's kind of in a sleepy town. A bunch of old people.
Jason Shelfer:So we're in a town called Oodawa. Oodawa, which is just fun to say. Some people pronounce it Ottawa, but the locals pronounce it Oodawa, so I'm going to go with Oodawa.
Jana Shelfer:But I have a confession Uh-oh, sometimes when the locals speak, I feel like they add a couple extra syllables. They do.
Jason Shelfer:And I questioned a local yesterday because one of the boat drivers or one of the coaches here's name's Joy J-O-Y. But when they say it, they say well go ask Joey I heard that too, to where I started doubting myself and I was like hey, real quick, because when everybody was doing the introductions I heard Joy and everybody is calling her Joey. So is it J-O-Y or J-O-E-Y? And everybody's like well, obviously it's J-O-Y, joey, okay.
Jana Shelfer:So I guess what we're kind of talking about today is that both of us woke up this morning and said I feel like I'm at summer camp. I really do, and I kind of resigned that I would ever have this feeling again.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and it feels really good and it also feels like we've been having so much fun at summer camp that we need a day of break, like a day of rest.
Jana Shelfer:No, you even said that last night at dinner you were getting everybody's phone numbers.
Jason Shelfer:Oh yeah, let's stay in touch after summer. Let's make sure we're still connected. Let's make sure we're still connected. What are your digits? Let's be pen pals.
Jana Shelfer:Which just reminded me of when I left church camp. That's exactly what we did we got out our pens and papers and we started writing down a list of people that we are going to keep in touch with. Yeah, and I honestly If our moms would let us call long distance.
Jason Shelfer:Some of you right now are listening and you're like what does that mean? Like it costs to call long distance. We didn't have cell phones. It was 25 cents a minute.
Jana Shelfer:And now all you have to do is, would you say, touch the tips.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, all you have to do is touch your iPhones together and you trade contact information.
Jana Shelfer:But it's funny how we're doing that.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah.
Jana Shelfer:It does bring out this childlike energy.
Jason Shelfer:And the funny thing is we're here specifically for a water ski camp and competition.
Jana Shelfer:Yes.
Jason Shelfer:So we will be having this type of summer camp again multiple times throughout the year because we're kind of getting, we're inserting ourselves into the ski community. So it's this, it's not like we're going to just be once a year, possibly running into different people in our different cabins and our different lakes, I guess around the world.
Jana Shelfer:It's funny, the group dynamic that starts to form on its own.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah.
Jana Shelfer:How you start getting those inside jokes as a group.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, do you know what I'm saying?
Jana Shelfer:Absolutely Without even realizing it, and I just feel like there's two participants that are actually sleeping in their cars and I don't know.
Jason Shelfer:It's just Well, so the stories that are being made this weekend or this week are going to be the stories that are told 10 years from now. Oh, yeah, that are going to be making people laugh at some ski camp, summer camp in the future for the next generations, and it's just going to be like, oh, remember when Vince and Noah were sleeping in their cars and slept till noon when we were all skiing sets.
Jana Shelfer:Or when he skied into the weeds and it was up his trunks.
Jason Shelfer:Like fix that bush Vince. Oh, so funny.
Jana Shelfer:Anyway. So I guess we're just laughing this morning because it really does feel like we're kids again.
Jason Shelfer:I know I love it. It's a great energy to be in and to just kind of go with the flow and enjoy the moment to be in that moment.
Jana Shelfer:Have you at all thought about work or thought about? Have you at all been worried?
Jason Shelfer:about anything Loaded down with worry. I have not had any worry.
Jana Shelfer:It's kind of been a let's let go.
Jason Shelfer:There was a moment yesterday so yesterday was Thursday Juneteenth, okay, and I did. There was a moment in the morning where I said I want to remember to check the stock market and the stock market wasn't even going. So as soon as I opened my phone I was like oh yes, juneteenth, stock market's not open. Shut the phone off, done, and after that nothing.
Jason Shelfer:You were good to go, good to go, didn't even worry about it, just enjoyed the moment, enjoyed the scenery, enjoyed every little thing about the day, about the day. So why does it take summer camp to get into this vortex? Sometimes I think we need to give ourselves space outside of our own environment to just and it might just be going to a coffee shop. So if you're in your own environment day in, it's that law of habituation we get caught in the cog of our own machine.
Jana Shelfer:Then that's a good point because I think not only the environment, but also meeting new people yeah because when you're meeting new people, there's a level of curiosity and, and you know, you're peeling back the layers of hey, you know what? Let's get to know each other, yeah.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, yeah. So it's just, you can create these environments wherever you are. It's just getting out. It's breaking your cycle and breaking your routine, that's all.
Jana Shelfer:I love it. And how do?
Jason Shelfer:we do that.
Jana Shelfer:I highly suggest it. If you're an adult out there, go to Summer Camp.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah create it for yourself.
Jana Shelfer:We got to come up with a cheer today.
Jason Shelfer:Okay, let's do it.
Jana Shelfer:Have a great day.
