Ever feel trapped in a mental loop of worry and negativity, amplifying your suffering far beyond reality? Join Jason and Jana Banana for a profound exploration into the distinction between "clean pain" (actual discomfort) and "dirty pain" (the mental stories we create). This episode reveals how your mind can be your greatest prison, but also your ultimate source of empowerment.

You'll gain practical tools, like viewing your life objectively, to interrupt negative thought patterns and focus on what you have, not what you lack. Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®. Good morning. I'm Jana, I'm Jason and we are Living Lucky®. You are too.
Jana Shelfer:We came across some hard truths. Now, we know this, we've talked about this, but when you see it on paper, sometimes it hits you a little differently.
Jason Shelfer:And that hard truth is you suffer more in your mind than in reality.
Jana Shelfer:We've often called this dirty pain versus clean pain. The clean pain is, in reality, it literally is you feel it, you feel it, it's done.
Jason Shelfer:It's over with. I just stubbed my toe. I feel that pain. That is real pain.
Jana Shelfer:The dirty pain is what our mind does with it, the stories that we start telling ourselves, the worry that we attach to it, the shame, the foolishness, embarrassment.
Jason Shelfer:It's everything I did to myself leading up to our dance competition.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, and it can be either before the actual occurrence or after, and for some reason, our brains just like to ruminate, or they like to anticipate and catastrophize, and catastrophize that this is probably what everyone else is thinking. However, I have to tell you nobody is thinking about you.
Jason Shelfer:That's funny and that's such a good noticing.
Jana Shelfer:Because they're all so worried about themselves what everyone's thinking about them.
Jason Shelfer:And what's I love when you just when you did the opening and you said we saw it on paper because that's that's one of the big things that you taught me in the journalist journaling yes Is that sometimes we just need to take these thoughts, put them on paper so we can actually see this word soup that we have in our heads, this thought catastrophizing thing that's happening inside, see it on paper and say does that really make sense or am I making this crazy horror story in my head and could it be different? Like, might it be different?
Jana Shelfer:I cannot express this enough we create our reality and we do that through our thoughts and our feelings and our actions.
Jason Shelfer:Well, our thoughts and our feelings, but it starts with our thoughts and our feelings. Yeah, because those influence our actions, because we only do what we think and feel a person like us would do in a situation that we're presented with? Yes, and.
Jana Shelfer:I have learned that it's almost like a communication with the universe. We are constantly manifesting. Whether we know it, we are very powerful beings. We are what Joe Dispenza calls the source. The source lives inside us and our thoughts are the. It's the communication we are putting out to the universe. This is what I think, this is what I want, this is how, this is what I expect, and the feeling that we attach to those thoughts is what the universe gives us.
Jason Shelfer:It's the magnet that brings it back.
Jana Shelfer:It's what we attract. So it is a communication that we're constantly doing. And when I say that we are all manifesting, so many people argue me on that fact and they say, yeah, but I tried to manifest this and I ended up getting this. And I say that's because there's some type of feeling that you're attaching to what it is you want and we can't put expectations with what we want.
Jason Shelfer:We just have to allow when we dive deeper into that. I wanted this. We can always get back to, but I didn't believe it was available for me, or I like there was this, this feeling of it will never happen for me.
Jana Shelfer:And and let me just, let me just reiterate, we do not attract. The universe does not give us what we want. The universe gives us what we need Right and who we are and what we are.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, so true.
Jana Shelfer:So those two things together is.
Jason Shelfer:That's a formula. So we are ultimate creators, like we were created to create, and we are constantly creating our reality. If you look around yourself, we are either creating our own prisons or we are creating our own palaces, like our own, like just our own perfect worlds. Yes, and like there's going to be people that are going to want to text in or email in and talk about semantics, that there's no perfect anything. However, we can lean towards perfection or we can lean towards this prison and disempowerment. So how are you creating your world?
Jana Shelfer:Yes.
Jason Shelfer:And if you feel like the shackles are on, to who is it? Who is it talks about shackles on, shackles off, martha Beck, martha Beck. So if you feel like you are creating a world where you are shackled, like you are in a prison, how are you creating that? That's the question that you want to ask yourself is because we will try to put the blame on someone else. We'll try to put the blame on our romantic partner, our children, our boss, the job that we have, our government, but we're actually doing that ourselves.
Jana Shelfer:We are. The minute we start taking responsibility and say oh, wait, a minute, I'm the creator.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, we have more agency than we give ourselves credit for. And when we take, when we give away our power, that is disempowerment. We are disempowering ourselves and I I, I spent a long time in this Absolutely.
Jana Shelfer:That's right.
Jason Shelfer:I spent a lot of time in that disempowerment and I felt very powerful.
Jana Shelfer:I hate to admit that, because I have looked at my life very like. I have put my life under a microscope so many times and I think, oh my gosh, why did this happen? Why did this happen To?
Jason Shelfer:me.
Jana Shelfer:And it was happening for me and I was creating those situations.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, we've often described me as like a bulldozer. Yes, so a bulldozer requires a key to get turned on, okay.
Jana Shelfer:So that requires someone else to come in. See, I don't know much about bulldozers.
Jason Shelfer:That requires someone else to come in and operate the bulldozer. The bulldozer has no agency over itself. Okay, so I'm not a bulldozer, but I was allowing myself to say I will get the work done. However, it takes an outside force, right? Okay, what I wasn't saying is that I am a creator. I am creating like I'm bigger and more powerful than the bulldozer.
Jana Shelfer:Yes.
Jason Shelfer:I don't need an outside force. I have my own motivation, I have my own will. I have all these things. I have complete overall agency over my whole life, like everything my surroundings, my circumstances and everything.
Jana Shelfer:Sometimes we don't want to take ownership.
Jason Shelfer:Right, because then we have to-.
Jana Shelfer:Because then we? It's a hard truth.
Jason Shelfer:You have to take away all excuses it's a truth.
Jana Shelfer:That is like oh, I'm the one that caused myself so much pain, I'm the one that did that yeah, it's, it's.
Jason Shelfer:It's one of those things where you have to get rid of all your excuses, all of your um, and take accountability you have to know that we are flawed we are like we. There are. We have weaknesses and we, but we also have strengths, like we were. It's wonderfully made, like. Our bodies are incredible. Yes, like. Even if we're born with illness and sickness, our bodies are still incredible.
Jana Shelfer:That is true.
Jason Shelfer:And our minds are incredible. Even if we're born with mental deficiencies, our bodies and minds are still incredible. That is true. They're special and unique. That is true, and we just need to search for those uniquenesses. That's true, and we just need to search for those uniquenesses. And that's where gratitude and like working with what we have versus focusing on what we don't.
Jana Shelfer:Okay, so let's recap here the hard truth. Once we saw it on paper, we were like that sounded like a little fart. I didn't mean that.
Jana Shelfer:We suffer more in our mind than we do in reality.
Jason Shelfer:We suffer more, and that's because we build our wall from the things that we don't have, instead of focusing on what we do have and what we can do with it.
Jana Shelfer:So if you are suffering right now, maybe just stop for a second, get outside of your mind and look at it from an outside perspective and think, oh, you're actually suffering a lot more than what's really happening in reality. So true, and I hate to admit it. I started to say this earlier and then I kind of cut myself off.
Jason Shelfer:Or I might have done it.
Jana Shelfer:But I have lived in that disempowerment before and it's not a place where you want to make home Yep, it's not a place where you want to make home, yep, because it can feel very helpless and victim-ish and it can almost feel overwhelming in that you don't want to take action because you're like, well, I can't do anything about it anyway. And that's not true. That is not true.
Jason Shelfer:Well, there's the like momentum builds. So you either build momentum in the disempowerment or you build momentum in the empowerment.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, oh my gosh. You just thank you for finishing that.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah and that's, and when you recognize, ok, where am I building the momentum? It's just that shift. It's just that shift, it's just changing directions.
Jana Shelfer:Yes.
Jason Shelfer:And recognizing. Oh crap, I do have agency here.
Jana Shelfer:You almost turned into David Goggins I know I don't want to do that With all your naughty words.
Jana Shelfer:You were talking about him this morning.
Jason Shelfer:I know, I know and I held back.
Jana Shelfer:You caught yourself.
Jason Shelfer:I did.
Jana Shelfer:Shifting sand.
Jana Shelfer:Shifting sand.
Jana Shelfer:That's what it is Okay.
Jana Shelfer:Well, once again, let's recap what's the hard truth.
Jason Shelfer:The hard truth is that we suffer more in our minds than we do in reality. And don't exacerbate that story. Just examine it with curiosity and say is this true and how might it be different? That's all. And then create momentum in the empowerment side because we have agency over ourselves.
Jana Shelfer:And if I can piggyback off of that, I find, and if you can train yourself to do this, it has helped me in so many ways. But I literally stop and I take my awareness and I almost throw it outside of my body so that it's looking in.
Jason Shelfer:So good.
Jana Shelfer:It's almost like those scenes in movies where you're on the ceiling looking at yourself in a way that has always helped me If I can somehow get out of my head and watch your life and watch my life sometimes. Just set up a video camera so that you're literally coming at it from the video camera perspective and you can see things differently.
Jason Shelfer:Get objective.
