Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®.
Jason Shelfer:Good morning.
Jana Shelfer:I'm Jana. I'm.
Jason Shelfer:Jason.
Jana Shelfer:And we are Living Lucky® you are too.
Jana Shelfer:Here's the quote. It's by the very wise Mark Twain.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, and it goes. It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure. That just ain't so.
Jana Shelfer:Okay, I feel like that is an aha moment. I just saw light bulbs go on top of both of our heads, absolutely top of both of our heads.
Jason Shelfer:Absolutely.
Jana Shelfer:Because we go through life, we have experiences and inside our little minds, we learn lessons.
Jason Shelfer:Yes. And somewhere along the way we think well, I'm not going to let that happen again. Yeah, so we build up that evidence of this is how something is and we don't leave room for how it might be.
Jana Shelfer:And maybe that just was that one time, or maybe.
Jason Shelfer:Right.
Jana Shelfer:But the thing is, sometimes in our heads, we start developing these. Well, you know, when I'm in these situations, these type of people tend to act this way. And then what do we create? We create our reality Because we start expecting in those situations for these type of people to act this certain way, and so we start looking for evidence that that's what's going to happen.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, it's. It's the thing that we talk about so often of. We will find exactly what we're looking for. And therefore we create these what are called limiting beliefs, especially when you know it for sure, like this is my truth, this is my belief, this is how it is. I mean, I see it in my life, where it's played itself out Like I believed got to get good grades, got to go to college, got to get a good job, got to get a good partner in life.
Jana Shelfer:And if you do all those things, and if you do, then if that, then this and that was the that is the recipe for success. Yeah, and that's what I knew and I was like, okay, no, that is the recipe for success and a happy ever after Like that is the happily ever after life.
Jason Shelfer:It's the way to get there. Yeah, like that's what I was taught. That's what I subscribed to.
Jana Shelfer:That's what we've been conditioned.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and I lived in that and I kept going well, this is the way I'm doing the things. What's missing? How am I not getting there? Because I'm doing it and I'm busting my ass every day to do it? And then I realized that, okay, it's not what you think you know, it's not what you don't know. I was thinking what is that missing piece? Yes, it is what I think. I know for sure. That just ain't so, because there's so many different routes to success, so many different routes to happiness, and a lot of it is just a choice.
Jana Shelfer:Again so many times. We've been doing this podcast for quite a while In fact. I hate to brag about ourselves, but I'm going to do that. I mean we're in over 100 countries. The number of episodes that we get per week are pretty amazing, if I say so myself, and we're in 1100 cities, so that's pretty cool.
Jason Shelfer:That is awesome, right yeah.
Jana Shelfer:And the fact that this all has happened very organically, mostly because it's been our journey of helping ourselves Right, helping each other Just unpacking little snacks. And then also helping those that have decided to come along beside us yes, us, and the more that we do these podcasts many times I feel like we're repeating the same lessons over and over and over.
Jason Shelfer:Well, just like on my journey, there's so many things that I'd heard and things will hit me so differently, and I'll have these little aha moments or insights and I'll think, oh my gosh, I heard that 15 years ago in a different way, and it didn't sink in the seed, didn't take, or maybe it did, but I wasn't able to nurture it.
Jana Shelfer:Right.
Jason Shelfer:And so when we talk about something again or repeat a subject, there's so many little pieces that we just might need to hear a different way, so that we're like, oh, that makes sense.
Jana Shelfer:Or hear it again when we're just a little more mature, or a little more evolved.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, right, so big.
Jana Shelfer:Or in a different mindset a different state. I mean sometimes when we hear things and we're pissed off, angry in despair or pain, it kind of goes through one ear and out the other. However, if we're in a state of gratitude, and in a state of receivership and love.
Jason Shelfer:And love.
Jana Shelfer:Then all of a sudden things kind of start to absorb.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, a little bit.
Jana Shelfer:And I know that, when we heard this quote yesterday, so Jason went to a Men group men's group and there was a, a speaker that he goes to once a month, and the speaker used this mark twain quote. Now, mark twain was a very I mean I read some of mark. There's a. There's a handful of people from the past I mean they lived hundreds of years ago and I read their quotes and they still resonate today. So we're all still going through the same journey.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah and same curriculum.
Jana Shelfer:Yes.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, it's. We're learning life as we go, and when are we ready for the knowledge? When are we ready for the new understanding of what we're going through?
Jana Shelfer:And I know people say well, life is different nowadays because we've got technology and social media and Internet and all this stuff. However, I read these quotes and I think no, they were. They were getting it, they were understanding. I know it's it's different in in the surface reality, but there's. These quotes resonate with me so deeply.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, and this kind of reminds me of another snippet that was said during the speech or the talk at my men's group, where they said it's not less than this, it's more than so when you talk about today having all the technology and all the things like that, yes and Like yes, and we have all this. We have so much ability and capability of doing all these things, but we have more distractions as well. So dialing back in and saying, okay, what is the simplest version of this?
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, so let's repeat the quote, let's just repeat it and let's just take it in, and let's just really study it.
Jason Shelfer:So the Mark Twain quote it ain't what you don't know that gets you in trouble. It's what you know for sure. That just ain't so yes.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, this reminds me of like money, like growing up, I thought I knew I'd heard get your money to work for you. And I was taught to get my money to work for me, and what that meant for me was put it in a 401k, invest in the stock market. And now I'm in my 50s I think it was like four or five years ago I'm at a real estate conference and they're talking about borrowing money, having someone else pay the mortgage, pay the rent by renting this property out and then building equity, and how you get money and debt to work for you, and then the compounding effect of that over multiple units, and I was like that looks like that money is growing fast.
Jason Shelfer:That money is growing like a weed.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah.
Jason Shelfer:And I was like I'm very fortunate I watched my stocks continue to grow because I kept putting money in.
Jana Shelfer:Right.
Jason Shelfer:But it's a whole different ballgame when you learn something new, like I thought that was the way. This is how it works you get a job.
Jana Shelfer:It's not the only way.
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:So yes and yes, yes and yes, and it's not just this.
Jason Shelfer:It's so much more, it's yes and there's more to the understanding. I love yes and and.
Jana Shelfer:sometimes we get stuck in our little perspective because we think this is the only way. I know a lot of people get stuck in. The only way to make it ahead in life is to work hard.
Jason Shelfer:Hustle, you got to grind.
Jana Shelfer:And that's just not true. Like that is just not true.
Jason Shelfer:What happens if you just allow yes?
Jana Shelfer:And sometimes you know, less is more. Oh, so big Right yes you know, less is more, oh, so big.
Jason Shelfer:Right.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, and I mean these are just limiting beliefs that we develop around money. There's limiting beliefs around relationships. There's limiting beliefs around health. There's limiting beliefs around mindset and growth and potential, and just mindset and growth and potential, and just every aspect of life.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, when you said less is more, it made me for some reason it's probably because I'm hungry right now but I thought of a buffet, and a buffet often has all these wonderful foods on it. But what if, like in the middle of the buffet, are individual meals that you could put together? That would be perfect. Like you don't need the whole buffet, you could order a la carte or just off the menu, and if you tried to eat the whole buffet you would be sick. You know, it's like pick out those exact things that you want in life and go after those things.
Jana Shelfer:This analogy is not speaking to me.
Jason Shelfer:It's probably because I'm hungry, I really hate buffets.
Jana Shelfer:I hate everything about buffets.
Jason Shelfer:Don't let my food touch. Yeah, I don't like my food touching.
Jana Shelfer:I can never see. I use a wheelchair so I can never see all the foods.
Jason Shelfer:And then people you can't see the sneezes on the sneeze guard.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, and then people, they go to get those little crunchies to put on their salad.
Jana Shelfer:They drip them across everything.
Jana Shelfer:They drip them and then they get the dressing from the blue cheese and they put it in the Italian and I'm like no.
Jason Shelfer:No, no, cut that off, cut it out.
Jana Shelfer:I don't want other people's hands over my food. I hate it.
Jason Shelfer:Oh, I shouldn't have brought up buffets, yeah no, it was a terrible analogy Rewind. Delete that part, I've been known to bring up some bad analogies, that's just terrible. That was something I thought of, but it's so funny that we can think that we know absolutes Mm-hmm, and we don't. We just have to remember that there's always an outlier and sometimes it's. We are the outlier, believing it's the absolute.
Jana Shelfer:I know, like you know, I think I divulged it's not even the word.
Jason Shelfer:I'm looking for.
Jana Shelfer:That we've been watching this reality show. Yeah, I probably should not admit that out loud, however, it's been really capturing me, because yes, that's what I've been doing is studying human behavior and relationships, and in it I've been hearing all sorts of limiting beliefs. Like you know, life is hard.
Jason Shelfer:Marriage is hard.
Jana Shelfer:Marriage is hard and all men are fill in the blank. You know what I'm saying? Yes, and I just want to step in and say these are not absolute truths.
Jason Shelfer:Right.
Jana Shelfer:This is what you have learned from your experience. However, if we change your perspective or change your perception, or change the story that you're telling yourself. Yes, then you will experience something new, something different.
Jason Shelfer:Well. So we talk about these same things all the time. It's what are our thoughts, beliefs and actions? And when we show up differently, we get different results. When we think something different, we get different results. So when you lock yourself into one truth and you say this is absolutely the way it is, then you limit that part of the equation that has room to adjust your results in a major way. And when you open up the possibility of everything because one of the biggest, I think when we watched that show, one of the biggest things is I'm not enough and I don't deserve. Yeah, you're right and that's the truth. That's the one thing they know for sure. That just ain't so.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, right, and then they just Right, and then oftentimes we hear them talk around each other.
Jana Shelfer:They project it, they start projecting those insecurities on each other.
Jason Shelfer:And create more of that, or someone will come in and say, hey, you're amazing it's to prove themselves right. Yes, I just got goosebumps.
Jana Shelfer:It's like they have these beliefs that are so ingrained in their subconscious minds and then they start creating their circumstances to prove themselves right.
Jason Shelfer:Even with all the affirmations with like hey, you're amazing, you're so deserving, like you can be told over and, over and over again.
Jana Shelfer:But when you have an absolute truth, and then that becomes exhausting for everyone around them. Yes, and then everyone around them finally just says they just give up and say you know what? You're right.
Jason Shelfer:Right, prove yourself right, and we're going to help you now.
Jason Shelfer:And then next thing, you know, it's like see, I told you so I remember one time you told me um stop fighting for your limitations and that's what we do and that's that's where a limit, that limit, those limitations are where we are saying this is how it is for me and that's what I know is so, and it's not Like if it's available for anyone, it's available for everyone and everything is available. There's so much abundance. It's incredible, and once we realize that the possibilities are endless, we can let go of some of these absolute truths and lean in with curiosity and innovation. I think.
Jana Shelfer:Okay, one more time, let's hear the Mark Twain quote, just because he's brilliant.
Jason Shelfer:It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure. That just ain't so.
Jana Shelfer:Do you think he knew that? Ain't? Ain't a word and I ain't going to say it?
Jason Shelfer:three times. If he was in my household with my mom, the English teacher, he would have known for sure, and his knuckles will be hurting. Maybe that's not an absolute. Maybe that's not an absolute. Thanks for joining us. Keep Living Lucky®.
