Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®. Good morning. I'm Jana, I'm Jason and we are Living Lucky®. You are too Lucky. People expect good things to happen.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, and that changes their reality.
Jana Shelfer:They have eternal optimism.
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:Now here's my little rub on this.
Jason Shelfer:I love it.
Jana Shelfer:I'm just going to be completely real, because that's what I am. I think over time, I think when we're born, we have eternal optimism.
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:I really believe that we are born optimistic people.
Jason Shelfer:I believe so too.
Jana Shelfer:And then I think, as we live, I believe we are conditioned to become a little pessimistic.
Jason Shelfer:Or disappointed, yeah, like expect the disappointment, like when's the other shoe going to drop, all these things. And that's why I think it's so important to just kind of be curious about optimism, like someone told me once, they'd rather be optimistic and wrong than pessimistic and right.
Jana Shelfer:So this is exactly In my experience. It felt like I had big stars in my eyes, big dreams, and I was a teenager, graduated from high school, went off to college. I was going to conquer the world. I was going to conquer the world and I felt like I just played balls to the wall and went out and I gave it everything I possibly had and I put every ounce and over and over again and I was told no, no, no, no. And I was disappointed so many times and I know that we've talked about. You have to let go of expectations.
Jason Shelfer:So, on the flip side of that, from the outside looking in, people look at you and they see all the amazing things that you've done. So it's that go ahead, that one more, that extra push that you always have, regardless of the quote, unquote, disappointment, that has created the world that you live in. And one of the new questions that you ask yourself all the time is what can I learn from this? Which is a way to lean towards optimism. It's that piece that says, hey, it didn't turn out exactly the way I planned it, or even anywhere close to how I expected it or hoped for. Maybe it's better, maybe it's better, yeah, and it opens up that curiosity little window that says what's the opportunity here, what's the possibility here, which is beautiful, like I learned this from you. You just gave me an aha moment.
Jana Shelfer:You just totally gave me an aha moment right now, because it is that extra push let's try one more time. And the perfect example is this career that I have been creating for the last 10 years. Do you know how many times I have put myself out there? Do you know?
Jason Shelfer:how many times?
Jana Shelfer:I have created, created, created, and do you know how many times I have literally been in the corner and I mean I hate to say this, but I've been in my pantry corner and I have thought to myself this isn't working.
Jason Shelfer:Well, I've heard, so I've heard, like when you started talking in the pantry, like that's your war room, that's, that's that's where Jana goes to to to air it out, to talk to God, to talk to herself, to cry sometimes Like it's a. It's one of those places where I I thought you were, I'm going to be very, I was going crazy. I guess I was talking to the bread. I'm going to be just so transparent here.
Jana Shelfer:I thought I was going crazy. Yes, because I was talking to the bread.
Jason Shelfer:I'm going to be just so transparent here. I thought I was like, oh my God, she's lost it, but Talking to the peanut butter, what I realized is is that's your version of light pole therapy, where you go out and talk to a light pole and there's a psychiatric experiment where people went out and talked just to an inanimate object for like 20 minutes a day. Experiment where people went out and talked just to an inanimate object for like 20 minutes a day and they were happier and clearer on their what they wanted, because they just got it out of their head.
Jason Shelfer:They just talked it out, because oftentimes we don't say anything out loud.
Jana Shelfer:We keep our dreams in our head.
Jason Shelfer:We keep all of our aspirations in our head and we go about doing, and then our little, mostly negative thoughts. I sometimes think that's what this podcast is, it is and that's I love. That's how we communicate and we talk things out, because how how many times do people walk around their house and doing the silent treatment to each other? And they're. They are not silent in their head, they're going that MF-er, I can't believe they did this. They won't talk to me why are they?
Jason Shelfer:avoiding me so and they're not saying anything. Now I'm not saying say the hurtful things, but lean in with curiosity and also get the words out on paper so you can examine them and then look through a lens of love and positivity. Because if you look through the lens of love and positivity you'll say, okay, well, is this true? Am I generalizing and putting absolutes on everything? Or is it one little miscommunication that we've really just tied into a knot and said I'm going to choke on this knot?
Jana Shelfer:Okay, you're giving a lot of information about a lot of different things. What I really want to make sure that we are staying focused on is that one last push, that one last push.
Jason Shelfer:It's hard to beat someone who won't give up.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, and that really, if I look back at my whole journey of success, it really is the fact that I get up and I keep going, I keep pushing.
Jason Shelfer:And I believe that comes from your optimism and your belief that things can work out, and also belief that you can't be beaten if you don't give up. And that changes your reality. Because too many people give up. There's a book called three feet from gold.
Jason Shelfer:So many people give up when they're ready to crest the mountain when they're ready to hit the peak and they're like I just I'm not going to make it, I can't go any further. And they can, they're. They just mentally and physically give out more, or I guess emotionally give out more quicker than they physically could. Like they just tell themselves I can't go any further, when if someone else said you've got one more push, they would do it.
Jana Shelfer:Like a coach.
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:Which is why, we sometimes need a coach.
Jason Shelfer:That's why we have coaches, yeah.
Jana Shelfer:It's just say, you've got one more in you.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, and it's the people who have that optimistic outlook that you know what you can. Yes, you can.
Jason Shelfer:They're going to start looking for the opportunities. They're going to start seeing what the lesson is and then they're going to make little tweaks to make it better, to make the next try better, Like that's just going to. It's going to be that thing, and people that are optimistic have better chances of connection with other people. Because who wants to be around Debbie Downer all the time? Right?
Jana Shelfer:Who's the couple that we always love to watch? Dax Shepard and Kristen.
Jason Shelfer:I was going to say Olivia Newton-John, but it's Kristen Storm, no Kristen Bell.
Jana Shelfer:Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard. Yes, so I once heard an interview with Dax Shepard and he said the biggest difference between, or the biggest lesson that he has learned from his wife is that she expects the best. She always expects the best.
Jason Shelfer:That's huge. That's a ticket to success.
Jana Shelfer:That's a ticket to success. That is a ticket to success.
Jason Shelfer:Whereas when he was in his late 20s, early 30s, he would expect disappointment. So this goes also back to what you're looking for, you will find and she was getting roles in Frozen, you know like she was getting roles.
Jana Shelfer:In big movies, in big movies, she was getting roles with big actors and with A-listers and he was getting, you know, not the roles that he wanted.
Jason Shelfer:Waiter number two he was which. Hey, it's a role, right. He was, so it's on the path but the problem is what you're looking for, you will absolutely find. That's the nature of looking for something is when you're looking for it, you will find it. And if you look long enough, you're going to find it.
Jana Shelfer:Because we create our reality.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, it comes back to that every single time, so are you focused on what good might come of it and finding the good, or are you focused on what might go wrong and then seeking that out and grabbing hold of it and choking on it?
Jana Shelfer:My gosh, this has been an aha moment for me. I am going to rewind this and I'm going to listen to it again, because you just gave me the motivation, the inspiration and the transformation to keep pushing. Keep pushing, because we may just be three feet from gold.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah. So what are you finding in the world and what are you looking for in the world? Let us know. Send me an email at jason at livingluckycom, or text us directly. There's a link in the notes where you can actually just text us directly. Let us know what your thoughts are on this. On optimism or pessimism Positivity I'm getting rid of the pessimism in my whole vocabulary. Yeah, because I'm Living Lucky®. I don't need it. You and Doge, that's right. Doge is getting rid of all these words right now. Cut it out.
Jana Shelfer:Cut it out. What was the quote that Jerry gave you? You would rather be optimist.
Jason Shelfer:I would rather be optimistic and wrong than pessimistic.
Jana Shelfer:Optimistic and right.
Jason Shelfer:No optimist. I would rather be optimistic and wrong than pessimistic and right.
Jana Shelfer:Oh yeah, that's good, that is so good, but but honestly, I would rather be optimistic and right.
Jason Shelfer:That's the ultimate. And this is the thing is, when you're Living Lucky®, you can be optimistic and right because you're always going to find the good and you're going to build from that. Right You're going to, because the good are the things that you have, the things that you gain, the lesson, the experience, the tenacity, the grit. So you're going to grab hold of those things, all that good, and then you're going to build from it. So it's like starting with a new level of experience, a new level of athleticism, new level of commitment, all these things that you have to work with now, instead of this feeling of failure, defeat, disappointment.
Jana Shelfer:I love this. I love this so much. Expect the best. Thanks for joining us.
