Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky® Good morning. I'm Jana.
Jason Shelfer:I'm Jason.
Jana Shelfer:And we are Living Lucky® you are too.
Jana Shelfer:Instead of trying to manage your time with to-do lists, we have the biggest hack that is going to change your life.
Jason Shelfer:Life changing.
Jana Shelfer:It's called now. Listen up, lean in.
Jason Shelfer:Get your pens out.
Jana Shelfer:Manage your energy.
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:Manage your energy and I guarantee you you will get everything done on that to-do list.
Jason Shelfer:And what will happen is you'll show up so much more effectively because when you're in the right energy space to tackle the job, then the job gets done better.
Jana Shelfer:You get better results when I first noticed this is when we started taking dance lessons and jason was like we don't really have time to drive an hour to dance lesson. Take an hour dance lesson drive an hour back and the cost is really putting a dip in our budget. Yeah, we're taking clients away to do this and we're spending Three hours three hours plus because we would get there early to like practice a little. Like this is really working. This is counterintuitive to all of the goals that we have put on the wall.
Jana Shelfer:That I have put on the wall the vision board that we have on the wall. This is not in Jason's values, and I said trust me on this one. This is in Jana's values and I didn't know how to articulate it. I didn't know how to say this is connecting the dots for me.
Jason Shelfer:And energetically, it is really a lifter. It's almost like putting you in a hot air balloon and saying sore, baby sore it is, and what I? What I didn't realize because I was resistant to to trying and I told myself when I was 12 years old I will never dance in front of people again. Because, back to a couple episodes ago, the judgment right, I love to dance. I will dance in the dark around the house, I'll dance in the shower, I will sing out loud, I will do it all in the car until someone sees me. Now I don't care. I will sing in the grocery store, but I put this resistant wall up for this ballroom dancing because it's very regimented. There's a path. This is the way to do this.
Jana Shelfer:But what I'm trying to say is that when we would dance together, it would change our energy, and that's where I was getting to is.
Jason Shelfer:I didn't know how beneficial it would be because the connection, the spark, the energy, like the movement of the energy, just the kinesthetic energy of it, but and then the touching of you, like you know, and then then the leading and and and the flow, all these. I'm getting goosebumps talking about it because it was a game changer and now we've been taking dance for a couple of years. You know, um, I thought you were going to mention back when we went to our first conference together. Um, cause we hadn't really conferenced quote unquote gone to conferences together until we went to the Cain and Alicia thing. And then we came home and we started creating morning routines because I was I got up early all the time.
Jason Shelfer:I wasn't really effective in the morning, but I was. That was my most energetic and most like. That is where I got the most done. Like if I got, I would want to get up, and like I want to pack the car or get the dock ready or get the boat ready or get the camping gear ready If we were going on a trip early in the morning get on the road early in the morning.
Jason Shelfer:Can we get on the road by five?
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, and why would we do that Mornings were not me?
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and so that was. I knew that's where I got the most done, like I would always go to work an hour or two before everyone else because I got so much accomplished, and I just knew that about myself. But nighttime I wasn't very productive. So I had to identify these new motivational triggers and things that would bring my energy level to a different level and get me to where, if there's something I need to get done at the nighttime or in my non-optimal energy zones, that I had a tool to kind of pull me up and into that right state of mind and state of being.
Jana Shelfer:Okay, so what are you saying?
Jason Shelfer:I'm just saying stop managing time, manage your energy, know where you are most optimal Okay, and then show up for the most important parts of your life, when you're most optimal, and have a plan. And then sometimes things are going to need to get done outside of your optimal hours and instead of trying to say, okay, I've got high energy 12 hours a day or 16 hours a day, because I don't believe that's really true for for most people, I agree, I know, I think energy waivers for most people and and people learn to manage their energy.
Jana Shelfer:I will say that with the foods they eat the exercise they decide to do or not, and the movement, the people they surround themselves. With meditation, I mean, there's so many different ways.
Jason Shelfer:Who they give their energy to.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, right, I mean there's so many things, the activities they do.
Jason Shelfer:Do you spend your optimal hours, giving all of your energy to someone else?
Jana Shelfer:Oh yeah, you know it's so funny of your energy to someone else. Oh yeah, you know it's so funny. I feel like a lot of people give their optimal energy hours to their work.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, that's exactly where I was going their family gets the crap. Yes, the low energy. I'm exhausted, I'm tired, I'm angry. Yes, all these things, and that's so when we started getting up at four to be very transparent Jana got up at when we started getting up at four. To be very transparent, jana got up at four. I got up at 430. I tried to get up at four and that's just not really my wheelhouse Because a lot of times Jana says we're getting up at four and she'll get up at three 330.
Jason Shelfer:Because she's, she shows up for herself and she shows up early up for herself and she shows up early.
Jana Shelfer:I do, I do. I like those morning hours now Now. It's weird.
Jason Shelfer:I changed. Too often we forget that we can give ourselves hours in the morning If we take away from the crap hours where we feel exhausted, where we're hiding from reality, where we're numbing out and say you know what, what if I went to bed an hour early or two hours early, got up an hour or two earlier, gave myself the time when I'm optimal and said okay, now I'm going to start building this life of my dreams. I'm going to start building the things like doing the things that I want to do.
Jana Shelfer:You know, you brought up a really interesting point, because when I started on my spiritual journey, that was the first change that I made, is I decided to give myself the first hours of the day. Yes, oh because I, I, you know, up until that point I would kind of sleep in and then, as soon as I would wake up, it was like immediately I would start answering emails, or I would start on Facebook or I would start, you know, answering texts to everyone else.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, I would. I would have to walk the dog there was always. It was like I would wake up late and then I would always be in a rush. Oh my God, I got to get to work and it always felt like, from the minute I woke up, I was rushing around to appease everyone else and then for the first eight hours of my day it was about giving, giving, giving, giving to everybody. So I started getting up really, really early and I implemented a morning routine and in that morning routine I decided to give those first three hours of the day to me and to invest in myself.
Jason Shelfer:Now look back Over those last 12 years.
Jana Shelfer:Yes.
Jason Shelfer:And recognize everything that you've built and done and, like the business that we have now, it's pretty incredible, like the, literally the traveling that we've done. It's pretty incredible I mean we had traveled a lot before, but we've done so much in the last 12 years yeah, it's a lifetime worth of stuff.
Jana Shelfer:It is really incredible.
Jason Shelfer:Years, it's a, it's a lifetime worth of stuff, and it's because we were doing, we were giving ourselves that optimal energy space. And that's not saying you're not going to have optimal energy when you get to work, because when you, when you're giving yourself those first hours in the, I'm getting goosebumps again because when you give yourself those first hours in the morning and you're building the life of your dreams, you are so excited to go do one of these means goals. That is our face, it our job. Typically like if you go, if you're working in the world, in America, your job really is just a means goal to try to get the life that you're hoping for in the future.
Jana Shelfer:Well, if you think of it like a cup, it's like I was filling my cup first.
Jason Shelfer:Yes. And then I had overflow to give to everyone else and what's the difference between serving from overflow versus serving from a half full or empty cup? Yes, crazy, it is Absolutely crazy, and so many of us like for so long, even me. I got up and I, I, I squeezed that damn cup. I know Like and it was, and I would go find ways to put a drop in there so I could give more. No, I so that hopefully at the end it was worth it.
Jana Shelfer:I, yes, okay. So I remember in my thirties like literally going to the doctor and saying I just don't have the energy. And then I remember sometimes like taking caffeine, like taking tylenol or not tylenol, uh, excedrin oh yeah, excedrin in the afternoon. Yeah, just to like get a headache down.
Jana Shelfer:Get the caffeine, yes, or yes, or there was a BC powder just to get like a little caffeine to wake me up in the afternoon. I'm like, oh my gosh, I need a little woo or, you know, like a Mountain Dew, just to like, give me a little whoa.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, just to wake me up, we artificially try to pump our energy when literally, this is a very naturalistic, holistic way of getting excited about life. Because think about it, when 30s, like you've got so much life ahead of you, I know. In 20s, like I'm thinking about all the times where Iyear-old self, my 30-year-old self, because I really fill that cup in the mornings and building the life of my dreams and I'm also watching my clients do the same thing- and I also feel that we're a little more aware.
Jason Shelfer:Awareness Of what brings us energy and what deflates I'm even aware of the fact that I thought I was aware so many years ago, like I was, like I. I know I got this game down. I know what I'm doing like I I am aware I am.
Jana Shelfer:I am so hyper aware that I know, when I get invited to a social event, I know that there's something inside Jana that's going to say, oh, I don't really want to go, I really don't want to go. However, if I go, it will light me up, it will bring me energy. I need to go to that social event because being around people lights me up. I love being around people and at the same time, after about two hours, it's time for me to go.
Jason Shelfer:And that's where, like when, that feeling hits because you're starting to ruminate on some. Maybe there's all kinds of things like the work involved, but that's where you hit that motivational trigger of. For me it's like the soundtrack to Trolls or soundtrack to the Greatest Showman. There's a lot of Disney movies that really just fire me up, because I like the words.
Jana Shelfer:That's what I love about you.
Jason Shelfer:I love the lyrics and I like the words and I'm like let's do this. Let's conquer. So you hit that motivational trigger, or you dance a little bit and now you've got your energy in the right space, and then you get your makeup on, you get pretty, you get your hair done all these things and then you show up in this glowing like spotlight of yourself because, you are the fullness of your being, and you're and you go in serving, like giving from a overflowing cup it's changing your energy.
Jason Shelfer:It's so much your energy. Tony Robbins calls it the two millimeter shift.
Jana Shelfer:It sometimes is changing your posture just slightly.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, remind yourself that you're the king. Remind yourself that you're the queen. Remind yourself that you can be happy if you choose it.
Jana Shelfer:Oh my gosh.
Jason Shelfer:Sometimes it comes down to a choice. Remind yourself what it feels like to smile or laugh. You know, laughing yoga was like a big shift for me because I was like. I was like you. You start kind of going in, faking it and like pretending and ultimately you are fall on the floor peeing your pants, hurt sides, hurt cheeks, laughing yes, and different energy. And then it's like hurt cheeks, laughing, yes, and different energy. And then it's like let's go do something fun.
Jana Shelfer:Oh my, gosh, it's all about your energy, and you will be surprised at how productive you can actually be. It's not about your time, it's about your energy.
Jason Shelfer:So today, just identify one thing that drains your energy and try to replace it with something that really just amps it up, that makes you excited, that brings your energy level to that place where you can accomplish anything.
