Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®. Good morning. I'm Jana, I'm Jason and we are Live it. Lucky you are also.
Jason shelfer:I changed it.
Jana Shelfer:Oh bulls, stop overthinking things, that's right, I just went changed it.
Jana Shelfer:Oh boo, Stop overthinking things.
Jason shelfer:That's right, I just went with it.
Jana Shelfer:We are our worst. I want to say enemy, yeah.
Jason shelfer:Well, our mind is our biggest obstacle and it's our biggest tool.
Jana Shelfer:If we just kind of dumb it down and do it immediately, you know that whole thing, just do it and do it now.
Jason shelfer:Yes, my Nike's slogan just do it.
Jana Shelfer:Just do it and do it now. Do it now, do it quickly and do it now. Sometimes that's your best advice.
Jason shelfer:It goes back to when your word for the year was start. Uh-huh, it's like just get in motion, just do it.
Jana Shelfer:One, two, three, go you know, and what's the dumbest thing? I don't want to call it dumb, yeah, what's?
Jason shelfer:the most ridiculous path, like a lot of times we get in so analytical. We have that quote unquote analysis paralysis. Overthink everything, and the longer you think about it, the less likely you are to probably do it.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, because it becomes overwhelming.
Jason shelfer:Yes. So sometimes we get stuck telling ourselves oh, I don't know where to begin, yes. Or I don't know how to start. I know what my dream is, I don't know how to get there, yes. And if you think of everything like a road trip, you literally can say well, what would be the most ridiculous way to start this road trip?
Jana Shelfer:And you can actually just start making motions and you will get closer. That is such a good analogy because I mean we're going on a road trip today, today, in fact, in about 30 minutes, we're going on a road trip and all morning it has been, it has been it's been a day already it has been a day just getting packed and getting here, we are a few minutes into the day and it's, it has been a day.
Jason shelfer:No, we're not even a few minutes into the day.
Jana Shelfer:We've been packing for hours now. We've been loading the car for hours and cleaning for the house sitter and the dog sitter. Yes, and trying to get things ready and really, when it comes down to it, sometimes you just need to start.
Jason shelfer:Yeah, put the first sock in the suitcase.
Jana Shelfer:And maybe it's just get out the laundry baskets or just start putting things in the car, or for me, it was start taping my ski. Now, I know that's such a weird little thing, but I needed to get that done so that I would have that done. Yes, well, that's part of the trip, right? We're?
Jason shelfer:going on a ski trip and having your skis prepped and prepared and all the things that are needed, for that is part of that. But if we get in the overwhelm because, looking at everything that we've done, if I was trying to get it perfect and make sure, okay, everything is here without a checklist Checklists are great for that, yeah, but if I'm thinking of all that goes involved in this, yes Then I would just keep putting it off because something else needs to be done. Something else needs to be done and my list just keeps growing.
Jason shelfer:Yes, and then what happens is is we overpack the car and we're uncomfortable on the ride, and we end up probably buying something when we get there anyway.
Jana Shelfer:Yes.
Jason shelfer:So why does it matter? I mean, we want to have the necessities, we want to have the tools and the ingredients to have a successful trip, and then anything else is gravy.
Jana Shelfer:And we can go buy gravy. Oh my gosh. But you're right. I mean making sure the house is cleaned for the dog sitter, making sure Tater has everything. It's just been a lot.
Jason shelfer:It can be overwhelming, and the beautiful thing is that we've done this so much that a lot of it is habit. But we also just need to make sure we start the process, and we've had a super busy week this week, like we had two conferences yesterday.
Jana Shelfer:One of them. We were hosting.
Jason shelfer:Right, so you were hosting, but that's the same thing. But you were there Like we're a team.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, you were the Insta husband hosting, right, so you were hosting, but that's the same thing, but you were there. We're a team. Yeah, you were the Insta husband. That's right, you were the one taking pictures for everybody.
Jason shelfer:You were everyone's Insta husband yesterday. So when we aren't able to divide and conquer and things like that and we have a busy schedule and it's like, okay, well, we got home late at night last night, let's get some rest, let's start fresh in the morning. And when we get up at night last night, let's get some rest, let's start fresh in the morning. And when we get up, let's start, let's do this. Let's just jump in and not think about it.
Jana Shelfer:Just do it. Yeah, make progress. It's so funny that we're bringing this up and talking about it, because my one woman show that's in May. I have really struggled. It's almost like I've had this creative block, which is very unusual for me. I'm like an idea person out the wazoo. However, it's been really hard for me to corral these ideas into something that is-.
Jason shelfer:Articulate and tangible.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, and that makes sense. That's a message for the audience.
Jason shelfer:So they have a take home other than entertainment.
Jana Shelfer:They can digest.
Jason shelfer:That's tasty.
Jana Shelfer:Does that make sense? Yeah?
Jason shelfer:And I almost believe that it's you telling yourself that you're stuck. And if we go back and listen to the last podcast about judgment and listened to the last podcast about judgment you are so talented and creative that I think you could put together whatever you want and it really needs to be. What do you want and what would you want if you were showing up for the play?
Jana Shelfer:I know, and here's the thing is that yesterday I hosted a brunch for about 20 women for International Women's Day. I did not prepare until the hour before.
Jason shelfer:And it was amazing.
Jana Shelfer:And it was pretty amazing.
Jason shelfer:And when you talk about preparing, you're talking about the speeches and the flow.
Jana Shelfer:I did. I mean, I did not prepare at all. In fact, the night before I ended up going to a play and I said you know what?
Jason shelfer:I'll just get up in the morning and prepare yeah, so a three-hour broadway play and then get up in the morning and try to prepare?
Jason shelfer:yes, and so it drains me and so when I, when I say sometimes we are our biggest enemy and that we overthink, we overthink things and it's like the analytical, it's analysis, paralysis is what it is that by saying what we talked about at the very beginning, what is the most ridiculous way I could start, that gets me in motion and then I can start adjusting my emotion and be more effective. Yeah you're right.
Jason shelfer:And it's just, and this the three second rule one, two, three, use it for everything Jumping, like teaching a child to jump off the diving board right Jump into the pool pulling off a Band-Aid. We know it's going to hurt or it may or may not hurt, but we think it's going to hurt.
Jana Shelfer:But just one two, three, do it on three, and sometimes they do it on two, just to surprise you Right? One, two Ow. Hey, you cheated me.
Jason shelfer:How effective would life be if you told yourself all right, I'm going to start.
Jana Shelfer:I know right. No, my dad used to be. I remember he went through this phase and he has stuck with us his entire life. But whenever a bill would come to the house, he would pay it immediately.
Jason shelfer:One, two, three, open it up, pay it.
Jana Shelfer:Pay it Done, it was done, and then he never had to stew front. He never had to think about it.
Jason shelfer:Oh, my God, bills are due today and you know what it's the first.
Jana Shelfer:So another part of going on this trip that we're about to go on in 30 minutes has been I told Jason two weeks ago. I said we must get the taxes done before we can leave on this trip.
Jason shelfer:And I've been working on the taxes for five months. Like, let me rephrase that I've been ruminating on working on the taxes for five months. Because it's not my thing. I hate it and I also told myself last year that I would do it month by month, so that when December came it was a little 31-day deal, yes, and it would be quick and easy.
Jana Shelfer:And we didn't do that.
Jason shelfer:And I didn't do that.
Jana Shelfer:So there's been disappointment, there's been just all kinds of feelings and there's it's. There's been emotions.
Jason shelfer:Backbreaking eye straining agony and doing 12 months at one time. There's been procrastination. And yeah, there's just been a lot.
Jana Shelfer:It makes it all worse and then on top of that has been the whipping of Jana saying we got to get this done, and the whipping of Jason by Jason. Yeah, I mean it's just been a lot, because it's one of those things where it's like it's one of those have to do's.
Jason shelfer:It's not a could do.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, and things where it's like it's one of those half have to do's, it's not a could do, oh. And another thing is because last year we were late.
Jason shelfer:We got them in at the deadline, but that didn't help their accountant at all yeah, so we had to file an extension, yeah it's like that, like why am I thinking about the tax deadline? I need to have them in as soon as possible so they can get their work done. Like how am I affecting them.
Jason shelfer:And I, I, I think about like someone that's in a foot race, like when they do the firing pistol, like they're like, on your mark, get set go. That's a rhythm of three and then they fire this pistol. Yeah, like how many racers would want to be able to go when they say, on your mark, right.
Jana Shelfer:Like to get that head start.
Jason shelfer:Why not get the head start? You're going to be at so much more of an advantage over everyone else that's trying to do the things that you're doing. If you just start Just one, two three, and then eventually you get to one, two, and then you'll find yourself getting in motion at the thought of the three-second rule, at the thought of the three-second rule.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, I love this. I love this. It's just a new way of thinking about it, and you've got me actually wanting to go work on my one-woman show right now.
Jason shelfer:And one of the biggest parts of this is knowing what you want to do and that's it. Or knowing what that feeling is that you're going for and how you want to feel, and then just start showing up in that it. Or knowing what that feeling is that you're going for and how you want to feel, and then just start showing up in that yes so, because if you don't define it, you're not going to be able to design it. That's one of the big parts that we talk about throughout this whole podcast is what do you want to experience? And then one, two, three, let's move towards it. Let's take some meaningful action, some bold, decisive decision that moves me in that direction, and even if I'm wrong, I will know and we'll be able to course correct and get closer to where I wanted to be.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, that's so good. That is so good. Just get started, don't think about it, just do, just do.
Jason shelfer:And ultimately you'll find yourself Living Lucky®.
Jana Shelfer:Just start acting. Just action, just action.
Jana Shelfer:Action. That's why they say it in the movies Action Action.
Jason shelfer:Get moving.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, thanks for joining us.
Jason shelfer:Keep Living Lucky®, bye-bye.
