Jana Shelfer:

Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®. Good morning. I'm Jana, I'm Jason and we are Living Lucky®. You are too. We've been doing this series, the 14 questions that will change your life. Today is number 14.

Jason Shelfer:

Da-da-da-da, which is who are your trusted advisors and confidants, and how can you leverage your support system for personal and professional growth?

Jana Shelfer:

So this is about surrounding yourself with the people you want to become. Jim Rohn always says if you look around, the five people you spend the most time with, that is who you are. That is who you are, and so, if we consciously choose, who do we want to spend our time with, who do we want to surround ourself with? Because, when you are reaching for your best self, it is very, very important to surround yourself with people who are supporting you, cheering for you. You want to have cheerleaders, but you also, on that same breath, you want to have people who will tell you the truth.

Jason Shelfer:

Yes, keep you accountable, keep you accountable. And it's a thoughtful truth, not a judgmental or biased truth. Yes, it's a sincere yes A sincere truth they want you to succeed, they love you for who you are and who you're becoming, and so they're not going to get in the way of who you're becoming, but they're not going to also allow you to stay who you were.

Jana Shelfer:

Oh yes, oh, my gosh, also allow you to stay who you were. Oh yes, oh, my gosh. You know, as I've been going through my transformation, which has been for I mean, I feel like I'm at the top now and I've been looking back, but when I at least the first five years that I was going through my transformation, I really had a hard time of finding my people, and I still struggle to that a little bit to this day. I still feel like I fit in nowhere and everywhere all at the same time, and I know that. Who is it? Angelo?

Jason Shelfer:

Maya Angelo.

Jana Shelfer:

Maya Angelo says that when you get to that point where you fit in nowhere and everywhere all at once, then that's when you have become spiritually enlightened. I'm not giving myself that title yet. However, I do feel that I haven't really found my core group of people.

Jason Shelfer:

So core group of daily hangouts, or daily or weekly, just people in our local community? Yes, because we have it globally and we've got Cain Minkus, ollie Bilson, robin Banks.

Jana Shelfer:

I feel like those have been our mentors.

Jason Shelfer:

Yeah, but they're also kind of our advisors, like when we're getting coached by them. It's they are helping us stay accountable. Also, envision a different way of being, like not recognizing that there's only one path to where we're going, so allowing us to think differently and more powerfully and more creatively. So it's a but then I definitely hear you in that local group, in the community that we're in or where we travel, where we can say, hey, you're, you're the people that inspire us, keep us accountable, keep us on the right path when we want to veer off.

Jason Shelfer:

Yeah, we're sounding a little snobbish as I'm listening to you talk, it sounds a little elitist, no-transcript everywhere is doing the absolute best they can with what they know, how they feel, their thoughts like spiritually, mentally, physically and emotionally. They're doing the everyone is doing the best they can with what they currently know. So one thing that we do is we look for people that are more successful than us, more, that they're loving more than us, and I think we love, like our love is incredible, but I see somebody that's I talk, I'll talk to someone that's just really loving their partner. You know, and I'm like you know, I never even thought of that, like I was loving in my way in a way.

Jana Shelfer:

You were, you thought you have done a better job at surrounding yourself with friends and people and advisors. I feel like I have kept it more at a business level, like I've got my coaches, I've got my hairstylists, I've got the people that I pay right. However, I have not found and maybe there's something inside me, I mean, I hate labels. So you know, I can go to an art workshop and I can fit in Great, don't get me wrong and I love the people that go there. However, would I turn and say these are my people? No, not exactly. And same with the elite water skiers that we have, all right, we've been surrounding ourself with. Yes, they've got mindset, they've got drive. They literally are the. It's like they are the, the animal that is pulling the sled. They're leaders. You know what I'm saying? They're a little bit adventurous and they're a little bit they've've got that. They're like sports cars.

Jason Shelfer:

Yeah, they got the flair.

Jana Shelfer:

Yeah, they are sports cars, and do I fit in with them? Yeah, because there's part of me that is a sports I'm a Ferrari too, that's right, you are. Right. And yet, at the same time, would I say, oh, these are my people.

Jason Shelfer:

Well, one thing that I've done is I've interviewed. I would say that I've interviewed a lot of people. So that's going out to coffee, going to breakfast, like it's, and just having a conversation and then leaning in, or even some of the groups that I'm in it's leaning in and saying you know what? This is somebody that I really would like to get to know more.

Jana Shelfer:

Yeah.

Jason Shelfer:

And it's like it's some. Some people are. I'm getting to know more so that I can mentor them, because when I teach, I learn right.

Jana Shelfer:

Yeah.

Jason Shelfer:

And then some people are kind of in my same space of growing and becoming, and then some people are just yards and years ahead of me and they've they've got the experience there. So and I got that from you with that 33, 33, 33 rule.

Jana Shelfer:

Oh, yes, I mean, I truly believe. If you go into a party or a room and you are the smartest, the funniest, the most charismatic, the most successful, the most spiritual, the most, Emotionally intelligent If you have the most in any category, then you need to get into a bigger, better room.

Jason Shelfer:

Yeah.

Jana Shelfer:

You do, because you can't grow when you're at the very top. You can mentor, you can help people along which, yes, there is growth in that. However, in order for us to start seeing growth possibilities and to start imagining at a greater level, we need to surround ourselves with people who are doing it. Then it feels possible.

Jason Shelfer:

Right, and that's what's beautiful when I have these conversations, because I can go to the coffee with a janitor and learn so much, just like so much. Or I can go with someone who has who, who's the president and CEO of a huge defense contracting system, and it's a different conversation and I learned so much and then. But they're also both learning from me because I am in the top in some of the areas, right, and it's recognizing hey, everyone out there has the top of something. And one of the things I've noticed is some people have the top of victimology. I don't want that to happen. They are the best victim. Everything happens to me.

Jason Shelfer:

That is so true, and it's just because we haven't decided, we haven't really engaged in where we are the best. So cultivating this support system for ourselves is crucial because once you've identified these other 13 questions, now your support system gets to lean in and say, ok, I see where you want to go, I see what you're creating for yourself, I see who you're becoming. Say, okay, I see where you want to go, I see what you're creating for yourself, I see who you're becoming. And they get to ask you questions or give you advice if they've already been there or they get to be the whip and say pop out of it.

Jana Shelfer:

Yeah, Get your ass to the gym.

Jason Shelfer:

Yeah, let's go. Hey, are you sitting in your comfort zone just digging a hole for yourself?

Jana Shelfer:

Yeah, you talk about wanting to make more money. Yeah, you talk about wanting to make more money.

Jason Shelfer:

What's stopping you? Oh, what's stopping you Right. What are you putting off right now?

Jana Shelfer:

Uh-huh.

Jason Shelfer:

Yeah, Like when one of my mentors said, hey, what are you avoiding? I was like, oh shit, because it'll come right to you. Like, what are the things you're avoiding? And then you get to just explore that with curiosity and say, why am I avoiding it? Like, am I avoiding it because I'm scared? Am I avoiding it because it's different? Or am I avoiding it just because it's a little off track and my soul knows?

Jana Shelfer:

it. I don't know if I like this conversation. You know what? I think we should do one more podcast to wrap up the 14 questions, because this one we all need a team. I've been on many team sports and when you have a team around you, you will rise together.

Jason Shelfer:

Right.

Jana Shelfer:

And that is so helpful, especially when you're having a bad day or a bad week or a bad month or even a bad year. When you're in a slump, you've got the team to lift you right. Yeah, lift, you inspire you Keep that momentum going in the right direction.

Jason Shelfer:

It's a beautiful push-pull relationship when you have the right support system in place.

Jana Shelfer:

And before we wrap up, I also want to say early on, when we were in our transformation, we talked about developing almost like a boardroom of advisors for our life. Now I know we briefly touched on this, but I just want to go a little bit more in depth, because it really is important to know, all right, if my monthly income is not where I want it to be, or where I think it should be, or if it's not covering the bills, I need to have a mentor in that area.

Jason Shelfer:

Yes.

Jana Shelfer:

To call and say hey, help me out here.

Jason Shelfer:

I want to. I'm going to put a pin in that right now, and I want to talk about that because there are hundreds of millions of people out there that are using people that are broker than they are as their financial advisors. And I'm not talking about the person that manages your 401k or manages your stock or manages whatever you are invested in if you're invested in anything. But you're having dinner conversations, you're talking around the water cooler, you're at the gas pump talking and someone is telling you about how there's no opportunities, the stock market's doing horrible, the economy's in the tank, and those people are broker than you or as broke as you Like. That's like I remember being there. And then we start talking to people who are having success in any type of economy, making money in any type of economy.

Jana Shelfer:

They make more money when the economy is down.

Jason Shelfer:

Because people get scared. It's like Warren Buffett Buy when people are scared, sell when people are excited.

Jana Shelfer:

Yeah, and so I mean money is one example, but like health, it's easy to see. Health. If you have a mentor or a friend that you can, I want to say, fish for resources when you need a little motivation in that area.

Jason Shelfer:

Or you think you've been doing everything the right way and it's like and you're not getting the results. You definitely need to have someone who is getting the results that you can say what might I be doing differently and I think of Mike. Pekow, when you said that, because I was like Mike and Robin are fit, they are energetic.

Jana Shelfer:

They are vitality, they've got it. We need to call them up and say, hey, let's go play pickleball.

Jason Shelfer:

That's right.

Jana Shelfer:

Anyway.

Jason Shelfer:

Get beat a couple of times and then.

Jana Shelfer:

Surround yourself with the people you want to be like.

Jason Shelfer:

Yes.

Jana Shelfer:

Because eventually you will become them and they will become you.

Jana Shelfer:

So that's the way the world works. Thanks for joining us.
