Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®.
Jason Shelfer:Good morning.
Jana Shelfer:I'm Jana, I'm Jason and we are Living Lucky®. You are too. This series has been fascinating to me, loved it.
Jana Shelfer:It is getting back to the basics. It is the 14 questions that will change your life. Today's question is really the master of all of the questions.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, it's about mastering your mindset, and the question is how do you typically respond to challenges and setbacks? And the flip side of that question is how can you cultivate a more resilient and resourceful mindset?
Jana Shelfer:How do you respond to setbacks? And for me, this is how this whole life journey has started. I believe that life is 10% of what happens in the world and 90% of how you respond 100% is the total there, okay. I was like wait a minute. You didn't listen to any of my statistics.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, that's funny.
Jana Shelfer:And I also believe that, whatever happens, it's just a circumstance and life is always happening in your favor.
Jason Shelfer:I love that it goes back to the whole spiritual curriculum, radical gratitude. Are you learning from what's happening in your life?
Jana Shelfer:Yes, I believe that challenges. You know, so many people call them problems, so many people call them, they almost get into this suffering victim mentality.
Jason Shelfer:Am I right? Yeah, I've been there.
Jana Shelfer:However, when I really consciously started calling them challenges, there's something in my brain, in my soul, that rises to the occasion.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, I feel like when you call them challenges, so challenges for you means like it has like a puzzle effect. It does when it's like, I'll figure it out.
Jana Shelfer:It's like, okay, let's go, this is testing me, let's get after it, yeah it's almost like all right, let's get better, let's do this.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, I think also just when I listened to your TEDx the first time and when I got to watch you practicing it and writing it the idea of radical gratitude, that's one of those things like when you see the obstacle, the challenge, the puzzle in front of you and you can either build that up higher with your mindset or you can bring it down to where it's manageable and take it step by step. And recognizing the radical gratitude in this is just something that is letting me know am I on the right path to where I'm going? Is it worth it, and who am I to move myself more effectively and progressively through it or around it, or over it or under it? Whatever the case may be, when you know that it's on your right path.
Jana Shelfer:You know, I just had an aha moment right now. I just totally had an aha moment because what I was trying to articulate in my TEDx when I talked about radical gratitude and I related that to my disability really my lifetime of being in a wheelchair is that adversity is a gift, and what I was really trying to say is that my experiences in a wheelchair has given me the opportunity to master my mind and my emotions, because it allows me to practice every single day. It gives me the challenges to practice every single day.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah Well, just being married to you has created this new level of imagination, new level of experimentation for me. So it's one of those things that, even just being in your sphere, has impacted me greatly.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, and I guess when I go speak so many times I get especially when I first started speaking, people would hear me talk and they thought I was just trying to educate them about what it's like to be in a wheelchair. They're missing all of the valuable knowledge that I'm bringing to the table. What I'm really telling and teaching them is how to overcome the mental aspect, the mental and emotional aspect of the chaos of life.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, we watched a movie over the weekend Just bear with me on this and the movie was about a rowing team and they practice rowing with their eyes closed, like blindfolded.
Jason Shelfer:And I almost feel like, if people so, when people first get introduced to you visually, they see the wheelchair and that, I think, sometimes sticks in their the meaning and the things that they're putting on who you might be as a person yes, excuse me and then if they could just meet you blindfolded, like they did on the radio for the 12 years, then they would get to hear really what that message is, because they don't have their unconscious bias and thought process wrapped around what you might be trying to explain and they could just hear the message and then they would understand that everything is about the limitations that we put on ourselves is simply in our mind.
Jason Shelfer:It's simply like we build our own mountains in our mind. We build our own prisons in our life with whatever we like, the things that we buy and we can't afford the mortgages, the responsibilities, the things we say yes to and don't think about all the things we're saying no to. At the time and when people can wrap their head around how everything that you talk about is hey, don't let me be the inspiration because I'm in a wheelchair. Let me be the inspiration because you can do anything if you have the right mindset, the attitude and perspective and that will lead you into showing up the way you want to be and who you want to be. That's going to move you so much further and quicker towards your goals and dreams.
Jana Shelfer:Oh my gosh, can I? Are we recording this? We are, because I think you just wrote my one woman show. It's not, I'm not an inspiration because I'm in a wheelchair. You just said it Look past that, look past that. Because it's in everybody. I have just been given the gift of adversity, and I've been given the gift of having to overcome the challenges every single minute of my life.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and it's really a perceived adversity and so many times people think, oh, if that happened to me, I could never. And that's like there's so many people or things that we see in the world, Like the news catastrophizes everything, and we look at it and say, if I was in that situation I would not be able to. We have no idea what our resilience is, how much grit we have until we're tested and you get to experience that all the time, which is now just your new norm, which puts you in my opinion and what I see and how I see you live your life and how we live our life. My opinion and what I see and how I see you live your life and how we live our life, is that it's just, it's way above the average. And then also the mental aspects of it, in that growth and persistent positivity, like noticing the possibilities instead of the probabilities, allows us to move more quickly and agilely through anything that comes our way in the process of creating the world that we love and want.
Jana Shelfer:I'm having such an aha moment right now. I don't even know where we're at in the podcast. I want to stop this and write down everything that I am thinking and feeling, because I really feel like I've had a breakthrough, which is why this series has been so impactful. For me, it's just a series of 14 questions that change your life, but Mastering your mindset has been everything for me. It has been everything when you learn to master your thoughts and then master your feelings, because that's the second phase of everything. Sometimes we condition our bodies into this emotional home.
Jason Shelfer:So big.
Jana Shelfer:Am I correct?
Jason Shelfer:Well, I'm thinking of a couple of clients just in particular that obviously won't be named by name, but they have identified their beingness as the person that things don't work out for.
Jason Shelfer:The person that has been wronged by a spouse, wronged by their boss, like all these, like victim type things, and there's an emotional home there that says these are my excuses. And I get it because I've experienced some of this in the like way back before. We started all this and it's like this is who I am and it's comfortable for me because when I have this victim blanket on, then I get to have excuses for why things aren't the way I want them. I get to have excuses for why I'm not doing the things that I am. Why try if it's never going to work out? Like there's a whole comfort level that we sit in and sometimes we don't even realize it's just a comfort zone and a protection zone and we forget who we were and how we're champions and how we can overcome, and like we don't, we stop looking at it as a challenge and see it as the problem.
Jason Shelfer:Yes that is true. Like would you rather have a challenge or the problem that you're never going to get through? Like, and it's just a redefining of, or reframing of direction, perspective and what else might be true and how else might we get there? Like, there's a hundred roads to roam, so you don't have to say this is the road, so I love it. Then question for today is how can you cultivate a more resilient and resourceful mindset? The resources are there. Are you being resourceful?
Jana Shelfer:Are you being resourceful? Are you cultivating a persistent and resilient mindset? Because, ultimately, it is your responsibility to protect what's inside, the power within.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and pick what's the most empowering, Like it's like there's so many truths that we get to just pick what we want. Are you picking the, the disempowering, the victimology, the fear, the doubt? Or are you picking the paths around any obstacle or challenge or problem or puzzle, Whatever you want to call it? Pick the most empowering word for you. Like Janet said, it's not a problem, it's a challenge.
Jana Shelfer:Like this is something for me to get to the finish line here. It seems so small. It's literally a word choice. It is a choice in the words that I use. It's wordsmithing the words, because didn't we read something the other day like spelling is like.
Jason Shelfer:so spelling has to do with words and the word spelling came from casting spells, so it's really like about creating. I did not read that. So maybe I read it somewhere. Like the origin of the word spelling came from people writing down, I think, spells or incantations. So the words that we use and the way they're spelled out, the way they're used in a progression, in a sentence, creates the story of our life. And if we're creating the story of our life, we get to create the story of our future.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, I like that, I love that so it's finding your authentic and real alternate truth.
Jason Shelfer:That's more empowering, because there's multiple truths and then saying if I'm this powerful here, then I get to start writing the story of my future however I want it.
Jana Shelfer:You're brilliant.
Jason Shelfer:You're bright, you're a radiant being of light. You're brilliant, you're bright. You're a radiant being of light.
Jana Shelfer:You're brilliant, you're bright. You're a radiant being of light. You're brilliant, you're bright. You're a radiant being of light Get it.
Jana Shelfer:Oh my gosh, I want to listen to this over and over and over. I'm going to grab my notebook and I'm going to start writing, writing, writing.
