Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®. Good morning, I'm Jana, I'm Jason and we are Living Lucky®. You are too.
Jana Shelfer:We are giving questions that will change your life.
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:Question number two give it to me, jason.
Jason Shelfer:Is what principles are non-negotiable to you or what qualities do you admire most in yourself and others. So this is leaning into the core values.
Jana Shelfer:We want to give you the top 14, 15 questions that will change your life 14, 15 questions that will change your life. So, if you listen to our podcast, in the next couple months, we're going to go through these one at a time and we're going to walk you through how we ask ourselves these questions. And while we're doing this, I want you to ask yourself the same question.
Jason Shelfer:So, identifying your core values, yeah, and a lot of times, like for me a long time ago, before we got on this track of personal development, I would go through life and I would want certain things and, subconsciously, my core values are going to lead me either to something or away from something.
Jana Shelfer:Right.
Jason Shelfer:Because if I'm chasing something outside of my core values, my subconscious is going to kind of put up resistance and fight against that. But I didn't have awareness of labeling and defining hey, what really are my core values? Like it was just something that was kind of an inherent knowing inside.
Jana Shelfer:I'm going to tell you I know that that sounds great Identify your core values. But, just as you said, most people don't know how to identify. They don't even know what core values are Right. And when I first started my self-development journey, I actually took a little workshop. It was with a church believe it or not and it literally gave us sheets and sheets of core values.
Jason Shelfer:What are possible core values? Yes, what have people defined as core values before?
Jana Shelfer:That's how I had to do it, and the first thing that we would do is we'd go through and we would circle the ones that stood out to us. Now, these could be honesty integrity, creativity, kindness, love, hope.
Jason Shelfer:So for me, when I was doing that some of the core values I was like, oh, I want that. So I would pick the core values that I wanted or I aspired to have, but they weren't really true to me, right then.
Jana Shelfer:And then so we would go through and we would circle all of these, and then we would go through and this is how you can narrow down the list very quickly is you take the ones that stood out to you and then you take the first three and you say out of these three, pick one. Now, out of the next three, pick one. If you had to pick just one, you can't pick all three. So then you say okay, which is more important to me, is it being loyal and faithful or is it being abundant?
Jana Shelfer:You know, and you really start learning a lot about yourself, because when you have to take three and just pick one, it's like ooh, would you rather be.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, it's you tighten, basically you're tightening it up. And I'm telling you that, or whittling it down thinking that I'm choosing one thing.
Jana Shelfer:But if I had to pick just? One and it really starts. It starts unveiling what really is important to you. And the thing is, when you find out what's really important to you, like I know that creativity is one of my deepest core values. I not only I love being creative. I love creativity in other people. I love sometimes when I am so creative that it makes me different than others. Do you know what I'm saying and when I know this about myself, if I can attach creativity to something that I dread doing?
Jana Shelfer:Oh, that's big, for example, if I say, oh gosh, I really don't want to go to the dentist today. Well, if I can attach creativity to that saying. You know what, after I go to the dentist, I'm just going to stop by Hobby Lobby on the way home and it gives me like a little incentive if I can somehow attach you attach that reward to it?
Jason Shelfer:yeah yeah and in the process, and that there's so many different ways to do that, or even if I say you know, healthy teeth helps me be more it helps you show up in a more creative way because you're not hiding yourself.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, and just taking that little extra step will make all the difference.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and when we know these goals we can bounce pretty much anything on and off the goals.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah.
Jason Shelfer:Or put what we want to do or experiences that we want to have or incidents that are happening and saying how does this match with my core values? They're almost like little bumper systems for your bowling alley of life.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, your bowling alley of life, did you just?
Jason Shelfer:make that up. That'll set you up to knock the pins down every time.
Jana Shelfer:It's true, though, and your core values are almost those little bumpers that come up to keep you on path.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and if you haven't identified them, what you'll find yourself doing is what I was doing so many years ago is looking at, looking outside, saying what do I want, what does someone else have that looks like I would like to have it, and then I will chase that without the bumpers and I end up way off track and I don't knock any pins down.
Jana Shelfer:You know what? That's a really great point, because so many times we are living in other people's values and many times it's it's soul destroying. Our parents, or maybe our boss or even our friends, our spouse. We live in their values because we want to please, we want to show up the way they want us to.
Jason Shelfer:We want the promotion, we want the acceptance we're trying to fit in and really what we need is our own individual values and to live fully in them. Yes, so that we can provide what we were meant to provide on this earth. And that's a connection Like if we're all puzzle pieces, you can't be the same piece over and over and over again. You need to have something that's unique and about you. And that's kind of where our core values come in. And yeah, they're learned, yeah, they can be developed, like your core values can change over time.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah. So, Jason, for you, what would you say is a core, one of your deepest core values.
Jason Shelfer:My top core value is love.
Jana Shelfer:Yay, that just makes me love you, just when you say that I don't know.
Jason Shelfer:And I didn't know this. I thought it was but you were doing it subconsciously. I was.
Jana Shelfer:You've always put love and our relationship Love and kindness has always Now.
Jason Shelfer:Now I didn't always act kind, I didn't always act in a loving way, and there was resistance to that.
Jana Shelfer:But you love yourself most when you are in that kindness sphere.
Jason Shelfer:I'm in that space and I also value myself most. I care about myself most and that's when I'm loving and caring in the things that I do and that's, honestly, when I understood my core values. It changed the way people responded and reacted to me and it also changed the way I felt. It changed a lot.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, I almost think that maybe I need to revisit this this week and now that we're doing this podcast today, I think that I'm going to do an exercise where maybe I can re-identify because, as you said, core values change. That's the thing about self-development it's a constant change. Evolution Because we're in a changing world and we're constantly changing the people we're around and we're constantly changing our goals and our and if we are growing as a person, then we are going to be changing and evolving.
Jason Shelfer:There's always going to be something that you can explore about yourself that's going to change everything that you're experiencing life when you have the awareness of it.
Jana Shelfer:I think another one of my core values and again this is one that sometimes wanes a little bit and sometimes I don't always act in alignment with this core value but it is health, feeling healthy.
Jason Shelfer:Feeling healthy, feeling good Acting healthy. Quote unquote taking care of yourself.
Jana Shelfer:Nourishing my body. That is important to me and I have found that and I know this is crazy, but sometimes in the moment, it feels good to have a Superbowl food or it feels good to have donuts. And I know in the moment it feels good, but it doesn't align with my deepest core values.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, and that's so. That's where you'll start. That's probably one of the easiest places to recognize when you're not within your core values, because we have learned that certain foods make us feel comfortable. They're what our mothers gave us or what we did as children, or what we were given as children, to quote unquote feel better. So, as adults, we will eat powdered donuts, we will eat ice cream, and in that very first bite we will feel those old memories come back. And then, after you're done with the pint, the serotonin and the oxytocin kick in and then yes, you're right.
Jana Shelfer:And it's not only immediately do I feel guilty because I will sit there and go. That was so great, I'm so glad I did that. And then it's when I when I feel like I'm going to transfer and I feel like I'm just a couple pounds heavier than I need to be, or even I feel that sometimes what I eat affects my confidence and affects the way I dress. It affects the way I sit and my posture, and you know we talk about physiology and how that affects Everything, affects everything else.
Jason Shelfer:We're like sausage links. Right, and nobody likes to watch the sausage get made, but they like the sausage.
Jana Shelfer:I guess what I'm trying to say is that knowing your core values just feels like it is one of the very foundational. Yeah, and it's the of the very foundational.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, and it's the beginning to the awakening, yeah Of understanding yourself. And if you have struggle finding what your core values are, send me an email, Jason@LivingLucky. com, and I'll send you a worksheet.
Jana Shelfer:I'm sending you an email right now.
Jason Shelfer:I'm typing it in, Jason, because I'm going to do this so that you can start whittling down and identifying what your core values might be and also figuring out like get it down to like three to five core values and that can be your mirror that says, okay, these are my core values, this is what I'm not willing to compromise on. And you can start gauging what you're doing and the actions you take, the words you're using, the life you're living off those core values, to see if you are in alignment.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, I'm going to do that. I really feel like I need to revisit, I'm sending you an email right now I'm sending an email to my husband because I would like to go through an exercise to just get reacquainted with my core values.
Jason Shelfer:That is so good. I love the word reacquainted.
Jana Shelfer:Yes.
Jason Shelfer:Because sometimes we need to get reacquainted with who our friends are growing into. Sometimes we need to reacquaint ourselves with who we've grown into. And where we're going, and where we're going, because when you identify where you are, then you're not as lost when you're trying to figure out where you're going.
Jana Shelfer:Identify where you are then you're not as lost when you're trying to figure out where you're going. Okay, so for the next couple months we are going to go through questions that will change your life.
Jason Shelfer:Send this podcast to someone, to someone around you, because let's do this together, shall we? And let's see who's inconsistent towards going who they want to be, or if they're kind of off a couple degrees, and bring them back to true north.
Jana Shelfer:Have a great day.
Jason Shelfer:Thanks for joining us Bye-bye.
