Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®. Good morning. I'm Jana, I'm Jason and we are Living Lucky®. You are too. Best Christmas pageant ever. Did you forget the title?
Jason Shelfer:I did the best Christmas pageant ever. Did you forget the title? I did the best Christmas pageant ever.
Jana Shelfer:I saw you like trying to mimic my mouth.
Jason Shelfer:I was saying watermelon, watermelon, watermelon.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, you're saying the wrong words. We went to see the movie the Best Christmas Pageant Ever. I loved it so much that I got in line again the very next night to see it.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, see, I only saw it once once.
Jana Shelfer:that's why I screwed up the title it was so good it made my heart melt. If you haven't seen it, I'm gonna just give you a brief. It is about this community that puts on a christmas pageant, an annual Christmas pageant, which is the story of Jesus's birth 10 pound baby Jesus's birth. Yeah, so it's. You know, mary and Joseph go in the manger and all of a sudden, they're having a baby. The angel appears.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, the three wise men, you know the story.
Jana Shelfer:Okay. So they put this on year after year, they want it to be the best one ever, and they just face obstacle after obstacle after challenge, mostly all around this family of kids. They have six kids, I believe.
Jason Shelfer:It's a lot.
Jana Shelfer:And the family's name is the Herdmans.
Jason Shelfer:And these kids are they are a herd of hellions. Hellions, it's a herd of hellions, and that's why I think they got the name.
Jana Shelfer:Herdmans, that is a very great observation, jason.
Jason Shelfer:Thank you. I only saw the movie once.
Jana Shelfer:I know I saw it twice. Anyway, these kids don't know how. The only way they know how to survive is by stealing, kicking, bullying, beating up people, cussing.
Jason Shelfer:Lighting things on fire, smoking cigars.
Jana Shelfer:I mean just, it's basically a gangster of kids.
Jason Shelfer:They are. They're little baby gangsters, they are.
Jana Shelfer:And anyway they get cast for every main role in this Christmas pageant.
Jason Shelfer:Because no one else would step up and raise their hand against them.
Jana Shelfer:Either the others didn't want to be associated with them or the Herdmans bullied them by saying no, no, no.
Jason Shelfer:No, this is my role. Don't you even volunteer. I'm taking this role, this is mine. And then they studied that role in detail and depth.
Jana Shelfer:Okay, we're not there yet. Okay, we're not there.
Jason Shelfer:Back it up.
Jana Shelfer:So the Herdmans get cast for all of these main roles and of course it causes havoc, stress, chaos, anxiety for everyone involved.
Jason Shelfer:All the moms in town went haywire.
Jana Shelfer:Everyone thinks this is going to be an epic disaster.
Jason Shelfer:Well, historically, how could it not be with the Herdmans? If the Herdmans are involved in anything, it turns to crap.
Jana Shelfer:And that is where the story just becomes so beautiful, because the Herdmans actually leaned in and they started studying, researching, learning, all about the role. And you just saw transformations in every part of the community, not only in the herdments, but you saw transformations in the other kids. You saw transformations in the community, in the director.
Jason Shelfer:The other moms that usually had resting bitch face. Right, even when they're happy like it's like. Somebody's not doing it perfectly. I've got resting bitch face because I would have done it better. Somebody's not doing it perfectly.
Jana Shelfer:I've got resting bitch face because I would have done it better. It just made me. There's so many lessons that I came away with. Yeah, I really just felt like when I tried to articulate what it was that I felt during the movie. I felt the Christmas spirit.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah.
Jana Shelfer:Because it just felt like love. It felt like love, light, hope. It felt like hope, All of those high frequency vibrations. It just tapped into those in inside me somewhere and I came away going.
Jason Shelfer:That's what christmas is about I think in the very beginning, um, when the main herdman girl, the oldest, said I can't be merry because I can't be, um, pretty and I can't be kind. And then or pure or pure, yeah, all these like, all these things of less than, because her identity pretty and I can't be kind. And then, or pure or pure, yeah, all these things of less than.
Jana Shelfer:Because her identity in real life was a badass bully.
Jason Shelfer:But the beautiful part of all that was that she wanted to be those things she felt like she wasn't person enough, like she wasn't enough of, she didn't have enough within her to be it. So then, when they said it's like a movie, this play is very much like a movie and we have roles that we have to fill, in her mind she goes we watch these movies and in my mind I pretend to be the characters.
Jana Shelfer:Okay, so I feel like you're skirting all around it. I feel she didn't think that she could play Mary in this pageant because she had never felt unconditional love.
Jason Shelfer:Yes.
Jana Shelfer:She never felt it or anybody believing in her. Yes, everything that you think of when you think of Mary, the mother of Jesus, I feel like she had never experienced those things, so it became very foreign.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, how do I act that out, how do I speak that language when I've never even heard?
Jana Shelfer:it about this whole movie is that she experiences love, hope, kindness belief, believing unconditional love.
Jason Shelfer:When the other girl comes in and she's like I believe in you, yes, we need you. So we want you, we believe in you, and when I hope that you will show up.
Jason Shelfer:And so by playing this part, leaning into getting outside her comfort zone, trying something new, trying something different, she actually starts to experience all of those things, how many things in life would we be able to do, and be able to do more powerfully, if one or two people just came alongside us and said I love you, I believe in you and I hope that you show up for it.
Jana Shelfer:So here's really I'm going to make this brief and short here's really what the message is is we attract what we are, and so the Herdmans, particularly the girl which her name was Emma Jean. She was attracting all of these troubles, chaos, negative energy. Nobody wanted to be around her because that was the only way she knew how to survive.
Jason Shelfer:That's how she was showing up in the world.
Jana Shelfer:That's how she had been taught to survive. That's how she was showing up in the world. That's how she had been taught to live. And in fact, you start learning. They start peeling away her character and you realize her parents are nowhere to be seen or found.
Jason Shelfer:And at one point, she says they're only home when she's asleep.
Jana Shelfer:Yeah, they're never here when the sun is out.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, it's almost like mentally you picture it and you think she doesn't know if her parents are home or not, because she's asleep.
Jana Shelfer:She may not even have parents who knows, Nobody's seen her parents in years.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, and when someone comes over to the house, they're like are your parents home? She said not when the sun's out.
Jana Shelfer:So I felt like that whole aspect of the movie just says it all, because it feels like she finally experiences love, hope.
Jason Shelfer:Community.
Jana Shelfer:Community. I mean just all of those high vibrational frequencies.
Jason Shelfer:In the right community.
Jana Shelfer:yeah, and it just you could feel it in the audience. So go see this movie and it was.
Jason Shelfer:It's the best Christmas pageant ever, and it wasn't perfect, but it was perfectly imperfect.
Jana Shelfer:Oh, it was I just I loved it. There were so many things about it. I mean, then you start analyzing how the community was acting. I mean the community. At first they were like kick these herdmans out.
Jason Shelfer:We don't want them Kick them out of the church and everything.
Jana Shelfer:We do not want them in the movie. And you think, well, that's not very Jesus-like, that's not very Christian.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, I would say that there's a character in this movie that anyone would be able to relate to.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, you know like.
Jason Shelfer:It's almost like that dynamic of you could probably relate to one or probably multiple. Relate to one or probably multiple, like when. When she said I can't do that because I'm not.
Jana Shelfer:I hear that in my own childhood and in my own dreams and goals, in our own brains, we're always like I'm not this enough, I'm not skinny enough, I'm not pretty enough, I'm not smart enough.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, we all feel that we hold ourselves back. And then it's just that, having someone to come in and believe in you and care for you and lift you up and say you can do it and I really hope that you show up and we can do this together.
Jana Shelfer:Well, if you ask me, this was we've been watching a ton of Christmas movies and this was the one that put me in the Christmas spirit this year.
Jason Shelfer:This one's sticky.
Jana Shelfer:This one put me in the Christmas spirit this year, so I highly suggest it. It's the best Christmas pageant ever.
