Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky® Good morning. I'm Jana, I'm Jason and we are Living Lucky®.
Jason Shelfer:You are too.
Jana Shelfer:I'm laughing because I'm so sore I can barely hit the record button.
Jason Shelfer:I've been hurting her. I've been hurting her. Don't say that People take that seriously.
Jana Shelfer:Every time we go to the doctor they always pull me aside and say are you safe?
Jason Shelfer:This is a safe space. You could tell us what he's doing.
Jana Shelfer:No.
Jason Shelfer:I'm putting her through a workout is what I'm doing?
Jana Shelfer:Yes, that is what Coach Jason has been putting me through a workout. Let me explain. I have come to the realization in life that when I need some sort of motivation, the number one hack that helps me every single time and I look back at my life and over and over I have done this and it always helps me stay motivated, become inspired, and that is to challenge myself with some sort of competition.
Jason Shelfer:You are a competitor, I am a competitor, and it's more like you love to win.
Jana Shelfer:So you're going to push yourself. I hate to lose, I hate to lose, I hate to lose. That's the thing.
Jason Shelfer:You're going to push yourself to the point where you're going to show up and you're going to do well, and this is kind of like in life, and sometimes we know in life that we always have, or we trick ourselves into believing that we've got more time and I can get to it tomorrow. I can do all these things, but then when we have these competitions and there's a date on the calendar that the competition is going to take place and you have to show up and hit the start line, then there's this constraint that we put on ourselves.
Jana Shelfer:It is. It's like doing art and you know how sometimes people say if you have a blank canvas, that's really hard to create from. However, if you have someone come in and just put a bunch of scribbles on it and then you create from, that, it feels like it's easier and that's a very-. Or if you tell someone-. That's a very abstract metaphor.
Jason Shelfer:However, what I'm saying In that same vein, if you tell someone you've got five minutes to create something, same thing they do it yeah, whereas if you say, you know, what you have a year you will start right now.
Jana Shelfer:You have a year to decide whatever it is you want to do and most of the time they won't really get serious about it until five minutes beforehand before the deadline. Get serious about it until five minutes beforehand before the deadline. Okay, so for me when I put a competition on the calendar, it not only helps me physically, it helps me first and foremost physically because I start eating better, I start preparing, working out, I start imagining, I mean, I start really becoming the winner that I can see in my head.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, Well that you are, that I see outside of you.
Jana Shelfer:Thank you.
Jason Shelfer:Objectively, I get to look at you and I see all your past accomplishments. I see all the things that you do every day. Like when I look at your daily routine, our daily routine, I see someone who's living the life and doing the things. But when we think of our long-term goals, sometimes it can be like, wow, I have so far to go.
Jana Shelfer:And you start becoming a little complacent, yeah, and there's so much to do. It's almost like you say oh, I can just do it tomorrow.
Jason Shelfer:Yes, because it's like I'll just do it next week, it's that to-do list that never ends, because we're constantly evolving and as we evolve, that dream gets bigger and bigger, because we keep pushing that imagination line, that that goal stone, yes, so much further out, because the goal line, not goal stone.
Jana Shelfer:That sounds like something in your bladder.
Jason Shelfer:I got to go get my goal stone removed.
Jana Shelfer:I meant, like in football, the goal post.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah. So as we grow and evolve, we realize that we're capable of so much more. It's what's our capacity? And then we start diminishing our own capacity because we say, will I ever get there?
Jana Shelfer:Okay, so let's just get to brass taxes here. Let's just tell them the story. On Wednesday, I was feeling a little lethargic and I'm like I don't even know what I'm supposed to do during my day. I literally felt like I was just and I have a ton of things that I should be working on.
Jason Shelfer:Or could be working on. Could be working on.
Jana Shelfer:Thank you for correcting me. I just didn't have-.
Jason Shelfer:Just reframing.
Jana Shelfer:Direction. I didn't have direction, and so I started Googling, and I found this water ski competition that happens to be here in Central Florida.
Jason Shelfer:It's not only a water skiing competition. It's a qualifying for Team USA Worlds.
Jana Shelfer:And it's an adaptive water ski competition.
Jason Shelfer:It's not like the neighborhood ski competition.
Jana Shelfer:It almost feels like I was Living Lucky®. I just said hey, google, show me what you want me to see. And it popped up, and so I thought oh my gosh, that looks like fun. So my first tip is recognize what sounds fun.
Jason Shelfer:What gives you energy? What kind of puts air in the bubble?
Jana Shelfer:What makes you perk up and go, ooh, I want to click on that, I want to click on that. That's literally what I did. So next thing, you know, I clicked on it and I went down this rabbit hole where two hours later I had lunch with Jason and I said I think I'm going to enter A water ski competition.
Jason Shelfer:So when you say rabbit hole, that can mean a lot of different things to different people, because some people can go in a rabbit hole.
Jana Shelfer:for days I went down this rabbit hole.
Jason Shelfer:It was two hours.
Jana Shelfer:Calling. So I would click on the website, I would do reading research and then I would find someone or a name or some sort of director or some sort of contact us. Reach out and I was reaching out to them and saying how do I get involved, how do I get plugged in?
Jason Shelfer:I want to do this.
Jana Shelfer:What is my next step? And that led to me needing to join all of these memberships, associations getting licenses. I had to take safety courses because I've never done a competition in my life, let alone a national championship yeah. And so there was a lot that needed to be done. I need to be classified, I need to qualify, and we need to get our boat in working order.
Jason Shelfer:It's been a year and a half since we've used the boat when you live on a lake.
Jana Shelfer:sometimes you go through spurts of where you use the boat and then sometimes you go through spurts where you're like it's a lot of work.
Jason Shelfer:Yeah, we've used the boat a lot since Wednesday.
Jana Shelfer:And then I needed to go buy a new life jacket, because my life jacket that I use. All the time had been out in the elements and it was full of spiders. So then I went and bought a rope and you know we were I. We got my ski and tip top shape. Wax on, wax off did a little karate. Kid motions with that we did a little karate kid motions with that. So we did all of the steps. Now it felt overwhelming because we still have a lot to do. However, we made it fun.
Jana Shelfer:Yes and we made so much progress. We made it play. I feel like the more we were playing we're like okay, let's go see if we can do this.
Jason Shelfer:And I know it makes you crazy when I do this, but it was a dance.
Jana Shelfer:Okay, tell me more.
Jason Shelfer:Just the whole the way we moved through it. It was almost like a collaborative moving back and forth between the two of us.
Jana Shelfer:It was.
Jason Shelfer:Like you take this, I'll take that. It was like one of us would take turns leading, the other person would follow, the other person would lead, then I would follow.
Jana Shelfer:No, we were up until like midnight one night just trying to fill out the forms because there were deadlines they had to get in and we didn't have all of the medical records and whatnot.
Jason Shelfer:I just love the way, like all the things that we're doing, kind of just lean into each other.
Jana Shelfer:It's true, that is true. So anyway, we finally get entered. So we've got that much done.
Jason Shelfer:All the fees are paid. We're set to be there and show up.
Jana Shelfer:We still have to qualify.
Jason Shelfer:We have to qualify.
Jana Shelfer:And so there's a small minor hurdle.
Jason Shelfer:I don't think you're going to have a problem with it. I've just watched you go through a couple practice runs.
Jana Shelfer:I've never done a full slalom course.
Jason Shelfer:On the outer course.
Jana Shelfer:Well, I've never actually been in an official course and completed it Correct, and that is the criteria for entering this competition. So since Wednesday we have been out on the boat and we have been Hammering it, we have been hammering it. We have been hammering it. I am so sore I cannot sit up, I cannot go to the bathroom. I am like, literally, I'm like I know Right.
Jana Shelfer:Right.
Jana Shelfer:And we've been. We've been getting out old skis, new skis, We've been adapting them changing the cage. That goes on it because I sit when I ski and then we actually have been out now three times since Wednesday.
Jason Shelfer:And about to go out again.
Jana Shelfer:Yes, and we're going to go out again here this evening and I'm telling you the teamwork that we have, like you said, the teamwork has been pretty incredible. I'm proud of us and I want to mention I have had flashbacks of where we started this journey. Now, when people say, well, how long have you been water skiing? Yeah, how would you answer that?
Jason Shelfer:Well, the first. So it feels like the first time you got on a ski might've been like 2012 or somewhere around that time frame.
Jana Shelfer:And literally we drove over to get a lesson to try it, and then we would wait a year, and then I would go through this phase where you know what I'm going to buy a ski because Jason wanted a boat.
Jason Shelfer:Well then, they called you and said will you come to the Disney Expo and do?
Jana Shelfer:it. Oh yeah. So then I went to an expo camp.
Jason Shelfer:Because we just saw your picture on the Liquid Access website.
Jana Shelfer:Right. We went to buy a new water ski and literally my picture was on their website.
Jason Shelfer:From that expo ski.
Jana Shelfer:And literally, my picture was on their website. And I'm laughing because, like literally, we were on the website for probably 20 minutes and all of a sudden I was like, wait a minute, is that me?
Jason Shelfer:Like neither one of us recognized me. But when you first got on a sit ski in the water trying to get into the cage, trying to get on the ski with no like there's nothing to put your hands on or balance yourself on and you've got this life jacket, that was a chore in itself.
Jana Shelfer:I would cry. We almost got divorced a few times. We called it the divorce sport because literally we would go out and we decided to do this because we thought it would be fun. Jason wanted a boat. We thought we could be out on the water, and yet I couldn't get in the ski alone and he would be on the boat, holding the tip of the ski and waiting. It just was like getting in and out. We would have fights in the water.
Jason Shelfer:And I didn't buy a ski boat. I know I bought a Regal.
Jana Shelfer:You purposely, I know, I mean.
Jason Shelfer:A cruiser. It was a good deal though.
Jana Shelfer:We're going to save this for we're going to continue talking about this for the next podcast, because I want to share this experience with you, because there are small little lessons along the way, and it literally starts from 2012, when we first started this, and we look back to see how far we've come, because it really is incredible and sometimes we think God's not working in our lives, and it isn't until we zoom out and reflect. And it's a moment like this that I look back and say, oh my gosh, all of the dots are connecting, even to the point where you said it's been a dance, because we've been taking dance lessons and so it all kind of is working together.
Jason Shelfer:And when we talk about Living Lucky® and getting aligned with your true values and vision and what you really want for yourself and your end goal, then all the right people come into your stratosphere, all the right opportunities, and then you look back and you can see how all the dots start lining up. And then the new dots it's easier to step on those stepping stones moving forward.
Jana Shelfer:Okay, stay tuned. We want to tell you more about this in the next podcast. Thanks for joining us.
