Jana Shelfer:

Are you ready to create a life you crave? Let's spin that doom loop of negativity into an upward success cycle and start Living Lucky®. Good morning. I'm Jana Shelfer and this is my husband, Jason Shelfer, and we are Living Lucky®. You are too.

Jana Shelfer:

My friend Heather came over on Friday and she gives me a hug and I say to her whatever you do, don't smell my hair. And she laughs. We both laugh, right. And then she says now why would you say that to me? And I said because I really need to go take a shower. So today's episode is about self-care.

Jason Shelfer:

Hair washing. This episode sponsored by Pantene (Just kidding). Maybe it's Maybelline.

Jana Shelfer:

Self-care. It's such a simplistic, elementary thing and yet it's something that maybe I'm alone on this. I may be alone on this, but I feel like sometimes I put it on the back burner.

Jason Shelfer:

One of the things I think about, especially in the summer oftentimes, is how often do we schedule things to do for other people and how many times do we schedule things to do in life Like the to do list, but how often do we put things on the calendar or on the to-do list to do for self-care, for ourselves?

Jana Shelfer:

I know this sounds weird, but when I was younger, when I was in my 20s, I did that all the time. I would go get my nails done, I would go get a massage, I would go to the spa, I would go get facials I mean seriously, up until my-.

Jason Shelfer:

Pedicure.

Jana Shelfer:

So it started out. I would get my nails done in my early 20s, then in my late 20s I got more massages and then in my early 30s I did a lot of skin stuff. I did so many facials and I would always go do something Pedicures. I would get pedicures in my 30s and then for some reason, in my 40s I kind of stopped. And here's what happened. I do not have the attention span to sit to get my nails done anymore. I don't know why, but I'm like I feel like I'm wasting my time by getting my nails done. I can't just sit there and enjoy it. It feels to me like oh my God, this is wasting my time.

Jason Shelfer:

So we've added too much to the to-do list, and so the meaning that we're putting on what's happening during that time has taken away the value of the peace and serenity and the joy that it brings.

Jana Shelfer:

Yes, and then you know, as far as massages go, it sometimes feels like by the time I get in my car and go make an appointment and find a place to go, and then you know you want to be clean and you and then you get all oily when you're there. So then afterwards you have to shower and get clean again, and sometimes I'm like you know what? I would really like a massage right now, but I may just lay down and I could really just use a nap as well. That would probably suit me.

Jason Shelfer:

Maybe my husband could rub my feet.

Jana Shelfer:

And I don't know if it's me just being lazy or if I just really don't care about myself as much. Oh, that's a limiting belief. I don't like that.

Jason Shelfer:

So I think one of the things that we can do is just let's try it, one of those things, just put it on the calendar because there is space in the day, and what could it feel like if we said I'm going to do this and I'm going to do it for me, because I am so important and I'm so valuable because we do the meditations?

Jana Shelfer:

We do the journaling, but it also feels like I don't even go to the gym and work out anymore. I used to do that.

Jason Shelfer:

And I know how good you feel when you do that, so I'm not the gym guy I used to hire a trainer. You had multiple trainers when we first started dating.

Jana Shelfer:

Yeah, I know I did and through a lot of our marriage first started dating yeah, I know I did and through a lot of our marriage, I also feel and I know this sounds terrible, but I have also become very conscious of my spending and so it feels to me like, wow, you know, I could spend a hundred dollars on a massage, or I could save that for dog food or a trip to Estonia. More like dog food. Yeah, you know, it is really. For me it's more like paying the bills right now.

Jason Shelfer:

Yeah, so there's a balance, but there are things that we can do to take care of ourselves and for self-care that do bring us joy and that also lift our energy, lift our vibrational frequency, that we can just put on the calendar and take some time for ourselves.

Jason Shelfer:

Yeah that's true, also put the meaning behind it that says I'm not wasting time. It goes back to the zero tasking, but zero tasking with a purpose and that's saying hey, you know what? I'm putting some decorations on this ornament, or I'm? I'm actually adding value, not just I'm recharging, not just zero tasking.

Jana Shelfer:

Yeah, I just. I also feel like, if I do have that kind of time to to do that, I would rather just go into the art room and make more of a mess. Do you know what I'm saying? And so I'm not sure. If yeah, I guess I have some work to do around this, because it feels like self-care constantly gets put to the back burner for me.

Jason Shelfer:

So it's just saying okay, well, I know I love doing these things, but I also value myself. I also feel that valuing our space and valuing, you know, if I do have extra time or if I do have extra, if I am going to schedule stuff, I would rather clean and keep our space nice and tidy, you know, or declutter.

Jana Shelfer:

I love decluttering because it makes me feel like that is self-care. Does that make you feel like that's self-care or that's house care? Self-care that makes me feel like it's self-care because it feels to me when my house is organized and clean or my space is organized and clean and decluttered, then my mind and my emotions can be organized.

Jason Shelfer:

So that is a form of self-care for you.

Jana Shelfer:

Yeah, the problem is, though, is that I, I don't live alone, you know live alone, you know there's more than one person that lives here and it feels to me like I know that my, my messes are out there. However, when I go to clean.

Jason Shelfer:

It's easier for me to see other people's messes than it is for me to see myself. Well, it just feels like that makes sense because you see the purpose in your mess. Because when it's like when, when my mess gets pointed out, I'm like, well, I'm actually in the middle of my project and I'm like, why is why is she not cleaning up her art room that has has stuff all over the table in there and I'm like, quit pointing out my work.

Jana Shelfer:

This is so true Like this is a real life.

Jason Shelfer:

I'm in the middle of my project. She's in the middle of her project, but all she sees is the work that I'm in the middle of. This is a real life thing. This is so. I hear you.

Jana Shelfer:

This is so real, that's happening right now. Oh, I hear you. This is so real, that's happening right now. Oh my gosh.

Jason Shelfer:

And that's kind of the way that works. So what if we went and took a shower and washed our hair, because that was where it came in and you were, like don't smell my hair. Yeah, I was really embarrassed. I was like overcome.

Jana Shelfer:

I'm like, please don't smell my hair, because I use a lot of dry shampoo and I know that there's like layers of dry shampoo because sometimes I'll, you know, go to scratch my hair.

Jason Shelfer:

And it's like whoa watch out for falling shampoo. Well, it adds texture. There's a lot in. I never even knew about dry shampoo. I can't use it. It's a fairly new concept, but it's a, it adds texture.

Jana Shelfer:

It's not new, it's just trendy it's.

Jason Shelfer:

It works with volume and all this stuff, like things I didn't have a clue about when you're working with hair yeah, maybe we should, like I have short hair, like I use a one and a half guard on my head, so it's like one of these things that I don't know, I wouldn't need to know about. But but if it's one of those things that's like going to give you that feeling like jump, give yourself that self-care and say I'm going to go wash my hair this morning or we'll jump in the pool.

Jana Shelfer:

Here's the other thing, though. Sometimes self-care makes me feel guilty. That's another thing that I face, and I don't know if anyone listening to this can relate to that. I'm being very vulnerable right now. I hope that they can take it Okay. So I don't know if there may be some sort of belief in my subconscious that self-care is a sub, maybe a selfish thing.

Jana Shelfer:

I do know that sometimes I have resented my mom because sometimes, whenever I would try to spend time with her, whenever I would want to, um, I always felt like I had done today it's a six hour process and I would sometimes, you know, come from states away to visit her and it always felt like whenever I would come home to visit, she would need to go on all of these appointments and this is and I was never invited to go with her either. So it always felt like, ok, this is mom's time for self-care, and it kind of felt like she didn't right. I'm going to wash the daughter right out of my hair.

Jason Shelfer:

No, I don't think, and there may be something in there, but I don't think that is the case, and probably part of that was that she didn't want you to smell the dry shampoo in her hair.

Jason Shelfer:

So she was like oh my gosh, my daughter's coming home. I want her to see how wonderful I feel inside. So I need to schedule, I need to go pretty up, I'm going to go schedule my hair appointment, I'm going to go get my face done the facial, the nails, and all this because I want her to see what an adornment her mother is.

Jana Shelfer:

I also think maybe there's some beliefs about not putting on a facade and just being real, and sometimes, you know, maybe I've taken it to extreme.

Jason Shelfer:

Well, there's multiple truths in every scenario.

Jason Shelfer:

Yeah, and it's all in what we want to tell ourselves. That is true, and if I want to tell myself that I am doing this and it's wasting my time, then I can tell myself that if I want to do myself, if I want to tell myself I'm going to do this because I want to show up powerfully when someone comes to visit and I don't want to worry about the way my hair smells and I want to feel good about myself and I want to have my shoulders back and I know that if I have a massage and my nails are done and my hair feels good and my face feels bright and or however faces are supposed to feel, then I'm going to, because I don't. I feel like shiny was the wrong word I was like when we go on camera.

Jason Shelfer:

They're like your face is shiny, puts a powder on it.

Jana Shelfer:

I'm feeling shiny. I learned from Heather, actually on Friday, that when your face starts to shine, that's because you've had a facelift.

Jason Shelfer:

Oh, did you know that? I did not know that. I don't think I was part of that conversation.

Jana Shelfer:

I was talking about some politicians and I'm like they have really shiny faces and she was like, oh, that's because they've had some cosmetic surgery.

Jason Shelfer:

They're tight.

Jana Shelfer:

Yeah.

Jason Shelfer:

They're reflective, they kind of look dead.

Jana Shelfer:

I Like they look like you know, you know how, sometimes, when you go visit a dead person and they look very, very I don't visit a lot of dead people, the conversation is not that great. Just saying, I lived across from my funeral home growing up, so I would go visit all the dead people. They were dying to live beside me, but you, I guess. Okay, yeah, I would give this to all the dead people.

Jana Shelfer:

They were dying to live beside you, but you boom, but then boom. I guess it would just end there, okay, yeah. So when Heather left, though, on Friday, and she hugged me again, and then again I said, whatever you do, don't spoil my hair. And she said, maybe over the weekend you should have a self-care day, and I thought, oh, that would feel nice. But when I always try to read between the lines when people tell me things like that, and I'm like what she's really saying is I need to go wash my hair, she's saying is I'm not taking care of myself.

Jana Shelfer:

Yes.

Jason Shelfer:

Huh.

Jana Shelfer:

Yes.

Jason Shelfer:

She sees potential in you.

Jana Shelfer:

Oh God Throwback. Possibilities he's referring to our last podcast. If you want to know all about the potential, listen to our last podcast and you can hear all about that one Self-care. It's important because of the way it makes you feel In the moment.

Jason Shelfer:

It may seem like it's, it's going to be whatever you tell yourself.

Jana Shelfer:

That is true, our reality is always the stories we tell ourselves.

Jason Shelfer:

You get to pick it, so choose the story you want to tell yourself. But self-care is important. You have to take care of yourself. That's a whole. Put on your mask first if the airplane's going down. Take care of yourself so you can take care of others, because the world needs you. You're valuable, you're important. You are one of the most important pieces of the puzzle, so take care of yourself. That involves self-care.

Jana Shelfer:

And then, when you do choose self-care, bring those emotions and feelings that Jason just described to the event.

Jason Shelfer:

Yes, and then you get to show up powerfully for yourself and for the people around you, for the people that you love and for your dreams, and you get to look good doing it Hell yeah.

Jana Shelfer:
